Washington Brewers Win Big at Beer Cup Awards

Twenty-four beers take home medals

By Rob Smith May 2, 2025

A close-up of a beer tap pouring beer into a tilted glass, with foam forming at the top.

Remember that old Tom T. Hall song, I Like Beer? I was a kid when it came out in the mid-1970s, but it must have stuck with me, because I’m definitely a beer guy.

I was keenly interested, then, when I learned that seven Washington breweries took home Gold medals in the annual World Beer Cup competition. All told, 24 beers from 21 different breweries won medals. Winners were announced yesterday.

Gold medal winners are:

  • Champagne Toast, from Bellingham’s Wander Brewing.
  • Wrecking Ball Imperial Stout (No-Li Brewhouse, based in Spokane).
  • Starway, from Battle Ground-based Barrel Mountain Brewing.
  • Lithium, from Resonate Brewery in Bellevue.
  • Punchface Champion, from Grains of Wrath Brewing in Camas.
  • Ridgetop Red, from Bremerton-based Silver City Brewery.
  • Peaked in High School, a strong red ale from Cloudburst Brewing in Seattle.

Unfortunately — even as a hops fan — I’m familiar with only a few of those brews. I now have a new project.

Silver City, Cloudburst, and Reuben’s Brews in Ballard all won two medals. A complete list of winners and categories can be found here. Statewide, the approximately 460 craft breweries carry an economic impact of almost $1.8 billion annually.

As the song goes:

I like beer
It makes me a jolly good fellow
I like beer
It helps me unwind, and sometimes makes me feel mellow
Whiskey’s too rough
Champagne costs too much
And vodka puts my mouth in gear
This little refrain/should help me explain/as a matter of fact I like beer

There are a lot of good ones here.

Its mission behind opening…

Brewery has been closed since August

For a few years I was a regular at Rooftop Brewing, just blocks from Seattle Pacific University. I got to know owner Craig Christian, a lawyer turned brewer, and always loved the beers and friendly staff, many of whom were recent SPU grads. It’s well known that the popular microbrewery on the southeastern edge of…

Irish pubs plan a special day of events

Did you know that the bucolic green often associated with Ireland and the patron saint historically was not affiliated with that color? The Order of St. Patrick is associated with the color blue. And Saint Patrick was not Irish. He was born in Wales. “Also, Saint Patrick is not the only patron saint of Ireland,” says Paula Stokes, a native of Ireland now living in…
