Moxie on Monday: Finding Your Ground in Grief

How to cope with loss and help others heal

The devastating fires in Los Angeles have left many of us feeling deep, collective grief. Having spent a decade in L.A. before moving to Seattle, I feel the ache of this loss on a visceral level. Entire communities have been reduced to ash, lives forever changed. The scale of devastation feels overwhelming. As an empath and energy worker, I’ve learned that coping with such profound loss requires intentional care — both for ourselves and for others.

Grief isn’t something we can bypass or rush through. It’s a process unique to each person. But in challenging times, there are ways to find a foothold in the storm, ways to honor our emotions while offering strength and support to others. These are the tools I’ve leaned on in the darkest times of my own life:

1. Empathy and Compassion Start with You

In times like these, empathy is a superpower. Feeling deeply is a gift, but it can also leave us drained if we’re not careful. It’s important to recognize when your emotional reserves are running low. Give yourself permission to step away from the constant stream of news and social media. Take a walk, breathe deeply, or engage in something that restores your energy. Self-care isn’t selfish — it’s essential if you want to show up for others in meaningful ways.

2. Connection Is a Lifeline

Simple gestures of connection can be a salve to those grieving. Slip into DM’s or send a text message letting someone know you’re thinking of them. Ask, “What can I do to support you?” If they don’t know what they need, and many don’t while in the midst of the storm, offer something specific: deliver a meal, drop off a gift card, or help with errands. These small acts of kindness can provide an anchor in times of chaos.

3. Meditation for Calm and Clarity

When the world feels unsteady, meditation can be a powerful ally. Taking even a few minutes to center yourself can bring calm and clarity. Grounding practices help us reconnect with the present moment, creating a sense of peace that radiates outward. When you’re calm and rooted, you become a powerful safe harbor for others in need.

4. Social Media as a Force for Good

Share messages of hope and resources for those in need. Highlight verified organizations where people can donate or volunteer. If you’re in a position to give, donate to causes that resonate with you. Compassion is contagious. Even small acts can inspire others to do the same.

Unfortunately, grief doesn’t have a timeline, and healing isn’t linear. There’s no one size fits all. What matters most is showing up — with your presence, your kindness, and your humanity. For those navigating their own loss, simply knowing someone cares can be a light in the darkest moments.

As we hold space for others, let’s also hold space for ourselves. By tending to our energy and staying grounded, we become a source of strength and love for those around us. And together, even in times of great sorrow, we can begin to rebuild, one act of compassion at a time.
