Moxie on Monday: Live For Now

This moment matters more than you think

By Catherine Grace O’Connell March 24, 2025

Person in a pink jacket and cap joyfully runs through ocean waves at sunset, with arms outstretched. A pier and sailboat are visible in the background.

What if today was your last day on Earth?
The last time you’ll see a sunset.
The last time you’ll hug a loved one.
The last walk on a beautiful beach.
The last nap. The last dance.

Would you see life differently? Would you savor every moment? Would you finally say the words you’ve been holding back, take the risk you’ve been afraid to take, or let go of the grudges you’ve been carrying?

Life is all about perspective.

Think back to when you were a child. Everything felt magical — the first snowfall, the smell of cookies in the oven, the thrill of a new adventure. Every little thing was big. Every moment felt brand new.

Then, somewhere along the way, the magic began to fade. We stopped noticing. We rushed through our days, eyes glued to screens, lost in to-do lists, drowning in distractions. The little things became insignificant. Even the big things lost their sparkle.

But here’s the truth: the magic never left. We just stopped seeing it.

If today were your last day, everything would matter again. The way the sunlight dances through the trees. The laughter of a friend. The warmth of your pup curled up next to you. You’d savor every single breath.

So why not live that way now?

The biggest regrets at the end of life aren’t what people did—it’s what they didn’t do. The love they didn’t express. The chances they didn’t take. The adventures they kept postponing.

Here’s how to shift your perspective today:

1. Pause and Notice

Slow down. Breathe. Look around. Feel the breeze on your skin. Hear the sounds around you. If this was the last time you’d get to experience this exact moment, how would you hold it?

2. Say What Needs to Be Said

Love someone? Tell them. Grateful for someone? Show them. Don’t wait until it’s too late.

3. Do the Thing You Keep Putting Off

Book the trip. Start the project. Sign up for the dance class. Stop waiting — the time is now.

4. Let Go of What No Longer Serves You

Resentment, fear, and self-doubt weigh you down. If today was your last day, would you waste it clinging to old wounds? Forgive. Release. Move forward.

5. Find the Magic and Wonder

See the world through the eyes of a child. Be in awe. Watch the sunset with wonder. Feel the grass beneath your feet. Live like everything is a miracle — because it is.

At the end of your life, you won’t remember the emails, the meetings, the material stuff, or the things you checked off your to-do list. You’ll remember the love, the laughter, and the moments that took your breath away.

So, what if today was your last day?

Live like it is.

Because one day, it will be.

Moxie on Monday: The Antidote to Exhaustion Isn’t What You Think

Maybe you don’t need more rest. Maybe you need more heart.

Burnout is real. It can also be a tricky devil, misleading us into believing that what we need is more rest.  I believe it’s something else altogether. The antidote to exhaustion is living life with more gusto and gumption. You know, jumping in with both feet rather than tippy-toeing in from the sidelines? Life’s a…

Moxie on Monday: Let It Take Root Before You Reveal It

Some things grow best in the dark

We live in a world that celebrates the loud, the visible, the shared. Social media turns our lives into highlight reels, with ideas and dreams posted before they’ve even taken root. But the most powerful growth happens in the quiet. Life-changing ideas often rise from solitude — like mushrooms, meant to grow in the dark,…

Rediscover your health through these increasingly popular outdoor wellness hacks

It could have been the fact that I was lounging in a comfy recliner, staring out of the open-air room at the Four Seasons Resort Maui, in Hawaii, listening to birds chirping, surrounded by exotic plants and palm trees. Perhaps it was the calming outrigger canoe ride I had taken from the shores of Wailea…
