Seattle U. Unveils Plans For New Museum
It’s set to open in late summer 2028
By Rob Smith April 1, 2025

Seattle University’s new art museum will break ground in August 2026 and will open prior to the start of classes in 2028.
The museum has been in the works since philanthropist Richard Hedreen donated his $300 million art collection to the university, along with seed money to fund the museum.
Tom Kundig, principal and founder of design firm Olson Kunding, is the architect.
“This museum will not only house an extraordinary collection of art but also serve as a welcoming gateway to our campus and a dynamic space for learning, reflection and community engagement.” Seattle University President Eduardo Peñalver says, adding that the museum will have a “profound” impact on both the campus and the broader Seattle community.
Kundig’s museum projects include the Burke Museum at the University of Washington and two wings of the Tacoma Art Museum.
The museum will be a “teaching museum,” meaning that it prioritizes education and learning. It will include flexible gallery space for art, music and theater productions.
The announcement comes on the heels of Seattle University’s recent agreement to acquire Cornish College of the Arts, which is home to the highly regarded Behnke Family Gallery.
Sellen Construction is the project’s contractor.
