One of the first Seattle-made gifts I got for my son when he was first born seven years ago was a little premature for a newborn but has turned out to be an invaluable teaching tool now that he is older.
The Moonjar Moneybox, created by Seattle native Eulalie Scandiuzzi, is a sophisticated piggy bank with three compartments: one for saving, one for spending and one for sharing (Seattle is one of the most philanthropic cities in the country, so why not start them young?). Alessandro will be dipping into his sharing bin this year to buy a toy for a less financially fortunate child his age.

A $30 version comes with two paper Moonjar Banks, which is handy for families with more than one child; the $45 version has one of the retro tin banks. The kit also comes with a lesson plan and conversation starters about money for parents and plush characters from the How the Moonjar was Made book (also included).
