Seattle Museum Month
(Through 2/28, times vary) In case you needed a reason to plan a romance-enhancing, mind-expanding, in-town getaway, here’s the deal: Through the month of February, when you stay at any one of 55 participating downtown Seattle hotels, you get half-price admission to Seattle Art Museum, Pacific Science Center, Museum of Pop Culture, Chihuly Garden and Glass, the Museum of Flight, the Nordic Heritage Museum, the Seattle Aquarium, the Seattle Pinball Museum and other art hot spots. Prices vary depending on hotel. Find more information at seattlemuseummonth.com

Must Putt
Smash Putt
(2/3-2/5, times and prices vary) We’re just “putt”ing this out there: Smash Putt is a lot of fun and always sells out fast. Right now, tickets are still available to this “Miniature Golf Apocalypse” event that, in addition to select weekends through April, is promised to be the last-ever “opportunity to experience this iconic Seattle-grown grown-up playground.” The “not-your-Grandma’s” mini golf course includes “devious devices with wicked robotic brains engineered by industrial-artists and hackers,” “vengeful robots,” “a menacing city-scape,” “dastardly lasers,” and “destructive games which put every sense to the test.” Think Mad Max meets the mini putting green and you get the idea. smashputt.com

Must Give
Denim to Diamonds: Seattle Hotel Association’s 20th Annual “Evening of Hope Gala”
(2/4, 5 p.m., prices vary) This annual charity gala organized by the Seattle Hotel Association this year benefits Mary’s Place, a nonprofit that “empowers homeless women, children and families to reclaim their lives by providing day and night shelter, nourishment, healing and hope in a safe community.” Gather at the sophisticated Fairmont Olympic Hotel for an evening that includes a silent and live auction, plated dinner featuring Chef Paul Shewchuk’s inspired dishes and a whimsical dress code that encourages denim jackets to tuxes, and high heel shoes to cowboy boots. marysplaceseattle.org/events/evening-of-hope-gala/

Must Chug
4th Annual Washington Hop Mob Triple IPA Roadshow
(Through 2/12, times, locations and prices vary) Also known simply as “hop mob,” this IPA-celebrating statewide beer crawl comprises the efforts of 49 breweries via 12 events held over 10 days. The official kick off event happens today at Brouwer’s Cafe, where beertenders will tap 32 Hop Mob beers (triple IPAs made by various breweries specifically for the Hop Mob event series) at once. Then, through the 12th, breweries as far south as Vancouver and as far north as Bellingham will host Hop Mob gatherings that spotlight tasting flights, full pours and the shared love of the “biggest, boldest, and hoppiest of all beer styles.” wahopmob.com

Must Hear
All of Us Belong Concerts
(2/2, 2/4, times vary) Part of the Symphony’s “Simple Gifts” initiative, these multi-sensory concerts led by music director Ludovic Morlot incorporate the voices of those experiencing homelessness through poetry, visual art and music from Charles Ives’ New England Holidays. Participants from three community nonprofit groups reimagined Ives’ masterwork and developed “artistic responses or reinterpretations of these holidays” with regard to their personal experiences. These spoken word and visual narratives will be presented in the live performance of the score that also features pianist Emanuel Ax performing Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 5. seattlesymphony.org

So I’ve been collecting these simple outings and local spots that feel like unwrapped gifts. If you’re looking for a way to escape or lean in, here are some recommendations. A sip of history You…

Back to Gander

Back to Gander

Seattle Rep revisits its original world premiere with a new staging that pulls you straight into the heart of the story.

When you walk into the theater, the cast is already onstage in what looks like a Gander high school gym—setting out dishes for a potluck, chatting, and then cleaning up. It feels like you’ve arrived in the middle of a reunion, which is the point. This run marks 10 years since Come From Away first…

Seattle’s Big Holiday Arts Guide

Seattle’s Big Holiday Arts Guide

A full lineup of seasonal performances across local theaters and venues.

In the words of William Shakespeare, “All’s well that ends well.”  Local theater and arts organizations are hoping for exactly that. Holiday productions often account for as much as half of their annual ticket sales. A 2018 Dance/USA survey found that The Nutcracker alone represented 48% of yearly revenue for many companies producing the Tchaikovsky…

Outside the Frame

Outside the Frame

In their first solo museum exhibition in Seattle, artist Camille Trautman uses photography to reclaim history, narrative, and self-expression.

You have probably seen Camille Trautman’s work without even realizing it. A huge photograph—20 feet wide—is currently hanging across the exterior of the Frye Art Museum, visible to passersby driving along Boren Avenue. The image is of a wooded landscape in black and white. Its edges are vacuous, with trees swallowed by darkness, but the…
