Seattle City of Music Awards this Wednesday

Launched by Mayor Greg Nickels late in 2008, the Seattle City of Music initiative is a now-through-2020 plan whose goal is to “create action over the next 12 years that enhances the climate for our music industry, and to propel Seattle’s leadership role in music throughout the nation and the world.” While I’m not sure exactly how that will play out in a tangible way, I am sure the Awards event at the Showbox this Wednesday is going to be a kick (especially with the inimitable DJ Riz as MC!).

Note that is not a tension-filled “And the award (designed by Dale Chihuly, natch) goes to…” type of event—they’ve already announced who will get the awards: Quincy Jones will receive an “Outstanding Achievement Award,” Fleet Foxes will get the “Breakthrough Award,” and KEXP has earned the “Impact Award.” So, nothing terribly new there, but certainly all well-deserved. And the musical performances by The Maldives, Pearly Gate and the Seattle Repertory Jazz Orchestra (playing big band) will be worth wading through the crowds that are sure to be in attendance if the City of Music launch party numbers are any indication.

To receive a ticket, RSVP to filmandmusicoffice@seattle.gov and include your full name, mailing address, phone number and email. Two ticket limit per person.

The show begins at 7:15 pm in the Showbox (at the Market). The Green Room lounge opens at 6:00 pm, with doors opening to the show at 6:45 pm. Attendance will be limited to venue capacity, so early arrival is strongly encouraged.
