A 1958 Mercer Island Kitchen goes from design-dont to a definite do

Sandy and Jeff Condiotty’s 1958 kitchen—with its pale pink cabinets, white shag carpet and an oven serving as a storage space—was an eye-sore and a tight squeeze, where holiday meals, for example, meant much table turning and guest squirming.
After touring a friend’s newly remodeled kitchen featuring a Henrybuilt unit, Sandy, a designer, was inspired to start sketching her own dream space. The makeover mission was to optimize functionality in the kitchen and create a large dining area, which would offer plenty of elbow room and showcase the couple’s colorful collection of Eames chairs.
Fitting the bill was a Henrybuilt M Series kitchen system ($29,206, plus delivery), with its appealing marriage of warm-hued American Black Walnut and slate-fronted laminate cabinets, a nifty matching mobile cart that functions as a work, storage and bar space and a dining table that at 36 inches high (a custom request), easily can seat 10 humans, as well as, underneath, the couple’s large Newfoundland and flat-coated retriever dogs.
With a more flexible space, dining and day-to-day living is now a pleasure for all, and there’s a consensus on the family’s favorite improvement. “We have an oven, instead of storage,” says Jeff. Aléxis Chicoye
