Spaced Out: The Final Frontier in Album Covers

Culled from albums released from 1940–1969 (from the collection of Rhino Entertainment executive Cheryl Pawelski), these 117 records—representing all genres of music, including Rocket Age Polkas—celebrate the dawn of the Space Age with then-mod, now-kind-of-hilarious graphic design (see especially Mel Tormé’s Swingin’ on the Moon). The EMP Science Fiction Museum’s exhibit also offers the chance to play a Theremin (often used to make UFO sounds in 1950s movies), so visitors can view covers and listen to tracks from these spacey takes, and also create their own moon music. Yes Men, Andy Bichlbaum and Mike Bonanno, pose as executives at some of their most despised corporations (Exxon Mobil, Dow Chemical, Halliburton) and represent them at conferences and events around the globe.
