PEOPLE WHO LIVE HERE: Modern Family-style broods and kid-free yuppies
With yoga studios, day spas, hair salons, dental offices, even a DIY dog-washing joint, the overlapping, family-focused ’hoods of Phinney Ridge and Greenwood—or PhinneyWood—have the essentials and the extras covered. SHOP: There’s an old-school True Value Hardware store and a quirky new, all-vegan shoe store/chocolate store (honest!) called The Chocolate Shoe Box. Tasty Delectable Collectibles offers local art, jewelry, handbags, prints, toys and mosaics. Don’t miss the bobblehead room. Buy darling decorative rubber and cling-style stamps at A Muse. Zak & Zoe sells dandy doggie and kitty gear, and woof-worthy groceries. With hip, pedestrian-friendly, all-ages footwear, Strut has every reason to swagger. At Labels Consignment Clothing, you’ll find seasonal women’s contemporary clothing from the likes of Cabi and Ann Taylor. Santoro’s Books is an indie bookseller with discriminating selections for adults and young readers. Banish boredom with board games, puzzles and toys from Berserk Games. Since a spiffy remodel, the produce display is prettier, and the beer, wine and deli sections deeper at Ken’s Market Greenwood.
SERVICES: Cowboys & Angels Salon has an exotic ambiance and topnotch stylists/colorists. Need more color? There’s a new tat shop in the ’hood called Two Birds.
EAT/DRINK: The ’hood offers a rich run of bars, coffeehouses and restaurants, including the groovy Prost! Tavern, the always-milling Red Mill Burgers and vegetarian icon Carmelita. Sarah Palin would feel right at home in Ed’s Kort Haus, where the range of meats (from alligator to camel) is impressive. Picnic is a cute food and wine boutique with sumptuous gourmet sandwiches, salads, cheeses and vino. The drinks and savory bites at Oliver’s Twist make it the perfect destressing spot. Herkimer Coffee is a hip indie beanery and de facto hangout for telecommuters. For lovers of garlic and Greece, Yanni’s Greek Restaurant has all the classics. The 74th Street Ale House proffers great pub grub and an endless beer list. Crimson walls fan the romantic mood at Stumbling Goat Bistro, and the luxe menu (pan-seared black cod, duck liver terrine) seals it with a lusty kiss. ART/CRAFT: The Phinney Neighborhood Association serves as fountainhead for DIY home-project classes, and perhaps the mother of all holiday craft sales. At Assemble Gallery & Studio (pictured left), you can get your crafts on with a beginner’s Tako fiber arts kit ($30) or a variety of other classes. The Fiber Gallery has knitting, crocheting and rug-making classes aplenty. Behind the imposing steel door of Francine Seders Gallery resides a collection of high-caliber art.
