5 Things You Need to Eat and Drink in June 2018

Beer delivery and Burien chicken wings, plus the pop-up you shouldn't miss

The farmers markets are launching and a million block parties are right around the corner—it may not be reliably warm until after July 4, but we’re feelin’ this summer thing already. Here are a few ways to dine and drink well this month:

Nosh on gnocchi.
Lisa Nakamura is a force to be reckoned with: The fine dining chef now best known for her gnocchi has been working out of the D’Ambrosio kitchen, making her wholesale gnocchi and churning gelato. If you’re missing her beloved Gnocchi Bar (and Allium before it), try her gnocchi at Tutta Bella locations for the next couple of weeks, prepared with spring morels and peas.

Get your beer delivered.
In late May, Pagliacci rolled out three more locations (in addition to the first on Stone Way) in its test run of beer and wine delivery, servicing Mercer Island, Bridle Trails (on the Eastside) and Capitol Hill. You guys, pizza and beer can now be delivered right to your door. The goal, says Pagliacci spokesperson Shelley McNulty, is to roll it out in all locations over the next few months. It’s a good time to be alive.

Check out the newest Burien hotspot.
We’ve written about White Center’s ascent into the spotlight, but Burien may be next up. The latest case in point: Bok a Bok, that temple of crispy, crunchy double-fried chicken, is moving into a strip mall in Burien on June 4. Go there, eat all the wings, don’t forget the kimchi mac ‘n’ cheese, thank us later.

Drink alllllll the Negronis.
My preferred summer sipper is the Aperol Spritz, but lots of people love a classic Negroni (an iconic Italian gin cocktail bitter and orange from Campari) best, and for those people, there is Negroni Week (June 4-10). Want to know where to celebrate? Consult this master list that includes everywhere from No Anchor to Westward to Tavern Law.

Try my favorite Japanese dish.
Back in November, chef Josh Nebe left White Swan Public House (side note: their patio is now open for lunch through the summer, and you should absolutely go) to launch a pop-up dedicated to okonomiyaki, a type of Japanese savory pancake that’s damn hard to find in Seattle but sooooo goooood. Now, his business Oko is ready for its second event, at Belltown’s Screwdriver Bar on June 10 from 7 p.m. There will be a DJ and (obviously) drinks—food is cash only, no reservations.

Worker-owned restaurants and community-driven kitchens shaping Seattle’s food scene.

Those in the restaurant industry have always faced unspoken challenges. Their stories are often kept behind the fold. Today, we’re hearing more personal accounts of wage theft, abuse, harassment, and a mountain of trauma in an industry built to nourish, celebrate, and commemorate.  How does one server, one restaurant take on changing the industry when…

The Belltown staple still feeds the city after 10 p.m.

After the last tickets come off the rail, floor mats are hauled out to be hosed down, oven hoods are scrubbed, aprons come untied, and someone counts the drawer. It’s a familiar ritual in restaurant cities everywhere. When the shift ends, cooks and servers go looking for a drink and something to eat. For three…

In her new cookbook, Seattle author and dietitian Rachael DeVaux keeps healthy eating grounded in real life.

Rachael DeVaux is not afraid of beef. That might sound obvious, but in a wellness culture still haunted by plain chicken breast and low-fat everything, her enthusiasm for grass-fed ground beef feels almost radical. The Seattle-based New York Times bestselling author, personal trainer, and founder of Rachael’s Good Eats has built a following of more than 3.5…

Here’s what was served up recently in the Emerald City.

Monday nights are worth celebrating—you made it through the first day of the week, so why not treat yourself to a delicious meal? Unfortunately, but understandably, plenty of restaurants are closed. But at these spots, not only are the kitchens still serving, the quality doesn’t drop off post-weekend, providing a perfect opportunity for a surprise…
