MUST SCARE SWEETLY
Seattle Chocolate Haunted Factory Tour
(10/19-10/28) Let’s be honest, Halloween is about the candy. So take your Halloween celebration straight to the source with this haunted house inside the Seattle Chocolate factory. Get all the frights of the holiday without having to risk the horror of neighbors who give out “fun size” treats. For even more Halloween fun, peep our list of other haunted houses, hayrides and costume parties here. Times and prices vary; Tukwila, Seattle Chocolates, 1180 Andover Park W.; 425.264.2705; experiencechocolate.co -Danny Sullivan

MUST DRESS TO IMPRESS
Seattle Opera Costume Sale
(10/21) A one-stop shop for upping your Halloween costume game, the Seattle Opera hosts this sale of costumes previously used in their operas and at 5th Avenue Theatre productions. Look for capes, petticoats, stage armor and more from such classics as Carmen, War and Peace, and Tristan and Isolde (doomed lovers in need of couples’ costumes, take note). If opera’s not your bag, these easy Seattle-themed costumes will do. 10 a.m. to 5 p.m; free entry; Seattle Opera Studios, South Lake Union, 200 Terry Ave N; 206.389.7600; seattleopera.org -D.S.

MUST SUPPORT
Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk
(10/21) Seeing pink? It’s Breast Cancer Awareness month and time to support those fighting or affected by the disease. One way to do that is to participate in the American Cancer Society’s annual Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk, a 3- to 5-mile non-competitive walk. Sign up online (makingstrides.acsevents.org), set a goal and start raising money, or come to cheer on the walkers. Walk begins at 9 a.m.; registration begins at 8 a.m. CenturyLink Field, Pioneer Square, 800 Occidental Ave. S; 206.674.4109; makingstrides.acsevents.org -Megan Lamb

MUST WATCH
TWIST: Seattle Queer Film Festival
(Through 10/22) The 22nd Seattle Queer Film Festival kicked off last week and runs through Sunday with a mix of features, shorts and documentaries highlighting LGBTQ filmmakers and issues impacting the community. This year’s fest closes with Freak Show, a film based on a young adult novel by James St. James that follows a trans girl’s run for homecoming queen at a conservative school, accompanied by a closing night gala at Il Fornaio. Times, prices and locations vary; 206.323.4274; 3dollarbillcinema.org -D.S.

MUST TOAST
Stoup Brewing Anniversary Week
(10/23-10/29) Stoup Brewing celebrates its fourth anniversary this week with daily events beginning Monday with a four-course, pop-up dinner in the brewery’s new upstairs event space pairing Stoup’s brews with food from Delancey. Though known for pizza, Delancey has cooked up a menu featuring everything but. Expect toasts, a chicory salad with an IPA vinaigrette and lacquered pork shoulder. The rest of the week includes a tasting with brewer and cicerone Robyn Schumacher, a fire pit party and wraps up with a Halloween costume run on Oct. 29. Times and prices vary; Ballard, 1108 NW 52 St.; 206.457.5524; stoupbrewing.com -D.S.

5 Dishes to Try in March

Worker-owned restaurants and community-driven kitchens shaping Seattle’s food scene.

Those in the restaurant industry have always faced unspoken challenges. Their stories are often kept behind the fold. Today, we’re hearing more personal accounts of wage theft, abuse, harassment, and a mountain of trauma in an industry built to nourish, celebrate, and commemorate.  How does one server, one restaurant take on changing the industry when…

Palace Kitchen Celebrates 30 Years

Palace Kitchen Celebrates 30 Years

The Belltown staple still feeds the city after 10 p.m.

After the last tickets come off the rail, floor mats are hauled out to be hosed down, oven hoods are scrubbed, aprons come untied, and someone counts the drawer. It’s a familiar ritual in restaurant cities everywhere. When the shift ends, cooks and servers go looking for a drink and something to eat. For three…

Protein Without the Pressure

Protein Without the Pressure

In her new cookbook, Seattle author and dietitian Rachael DeVaux keeps healthy eating grounded in real life.

Rachael DeVaux is not afraid of beef. That might sound obvious, but in a wellness culture still haunted by plain chicken breast and low-fat everything, her enthusiasm for grass-fed ground beef feels almost radical. The Seattle-based New York Times bestselling author, personal trainer, and founder of Rachael’s Good Eats has built a following of more than 3.5…

But at these spots, not only are the kitchens still serving, the quality doesn’t drop off post-weekend, providing a perfect opportunity for a surprise…
