Ever wonder what your favorite artists from the era of jelly shoes and scrunchies are doing today?

“If you can remember the ’60s, you weren’t there,” runs the famous quip. But the iconic acts that followed 20 years later have aged a lot more gracefully, as Seattle freelance photographer Mike Hipple proves in his new book 80s Redux: Your Favorite Musicians Today.

Punk, New Wave and the gray area in between are all represented; some musicians have retired, some are still touring and some are newly relevant, including ska-punk-rock-funk fusion group Fishbone, who have simply translated their political engagement from the Age of Reagan to the Age of Trump.

This week at Third Place Books, Hipple will talk about his quest to meet and capture these artists, catch us up on what they’ve been up to and maybe share a drop or two of gossip.

Photo Essay: The Relief of the Moment

Words and photography by Nick Ward.

Photography tricks my ADHD brain into doing something borderline miraculous: It allows me to focus on exactly one thing at a time. When I press the shutter and hear that lovely little ka-chunk, the inner chatter winks out. I feel oddly connected to the moment by being outside it, observing through the frame instead of…
