Food We Love: Pabellon Arepa at Arepa Venezuelan Kitchen

A flavorful, swoon-worthy sandwich with Venezuelan flair

This article originally appeared in the July 2016 issue of Seattle magazine.

First, it was Paseo’s.

Then, Un Bien’s. Now, a third and totally original Caribbean sandwich has stolen my heart: the pabellon arepa ($6.85) at Arepa Venezuelan Kitchen, a casual Venezuelan café. Arepas—soft, pita-like sandwiches—are handmade from white corn flour, then grilled or deep-fried and stuffed with, in the case of the pabellon, black beans, sweet plantains, white cheddar and tender shredded beef. Just thinking about this steamy perfect marriage of flavor and texture makes my taste buds quiver.

Did I mention it’s gluten-free? You’re welcome. University District, 1405 NE 50th St.; 206.556.4879; Facebook, “Arepa Venezuelan Kitchen”
