By Seattle Mag August 21, 2012

The line: The Capitol Hill-based designer’s line is synonymous with tomboy chic, focused on relaxed separates that pair sand-washed silk charmeuse tops with silk/wool twill bottoms. In addition to the aesthetic appeal, the line’s renegade attitude harks to a historical moment in women’s wear. “Pants at one point were liberating,” Kelly says. “They were about being comfortable and feeling good.”

Creative spark: Combining minimalistic elegance with Bauhaus-era inspiration, Kelly creates easy-to-wear separates with edge. “I was heavily inspired by the clean lines, minimalism and color blocking of modernist art from the 1930s to the 1960s and wanted to create clothes that had the ease and simplicity of modernism, while still maintaining interest,” says the 28-year-old. “I’m also inspired by menswear silhouettes. I use a lot of collars and straight cuts while maintaining femininity through color blocking, delicate fabrications and pastels.”

Favorite fashion trend: “I really like the combination of tailored clothing and sportswear,” Kelly says. “I love that it’s comfortable yet work appropriate, it’s chic and casual. I just got a pair of tailored pants made of silk, but with an elastic waist.”

Line: Hoyden

School: Seattle Central Community College School of Apparel Design, Class of 2012
