MUST EAT
Grilled Cheese Grand Prix
(11/17-11/18) A spin-off of the Seattle Street Food Festival, the Grilled Cheese Grand Prix is a brand-new event from the creator of the Taco Libre Showdown and Seattle Outdoor Cinema. More than a dozen food trucks and booths will compete for the title of best grilled cheese, joined by numerous local breweries, wineries, and other purveyors like Tillamook Cheese and Seattle Pickle Co., which is part of (dare we say) Seattle’s thriving pickling scene. Regular and VIP tickets are good for one of the three cheesy sessions and include 10-15 tokens for drink tasters. Food purchased separately. Times and prices vary. Magnuson Park Hangar 30, 6310 NE 74th St.; gcgrandprix.com

MUST DRINK
Washington Distillers Festival
(11/18) The Washington Distillers Festival happens this Saturday at McMenamins Anderson School location, a Bothell junior high school that the brewery chain renovated into an entertainment complex. The booze fest includes more than 20 distilleries, such as Woodinville Whiskey Co., XO Alambic, and Heritage Distilling, which is set to open its new Roslyn tasting room the same day. A silent auction will offer the chance to win private distillery tours and tastings and other prizes. $35, 4-8 p.m.; Bothell, 18607 Bothell Way NE; 425.398.0122; mcmenamins.com

MUST RIDE
Cranksgiving
(11/18) Help out the Rainier Valley Food Bank in time for Thanksgiving by participating in Seattle Bike Blog’s Cranksgiving event, in which teams go on a scavenger hunt for various food items from a secret list. Bringing in more items and biking to more stores nets each team more points toward prize giveaways. Free, 10:30 a.m. to 2 p.m.; Swift Industries, 558 1st Ave. S.; 206.696.3059; seattlebikeblog.com

MUST BE INSPIRED
TEDxSeattle
(11/18) Be inspired by regional influencers like Rex Holbein and Jenn LaFreniere of homeless housing initiative The BLOCK Project and Charlie Swan, Pacific Hyperloop cofounder, as they address topics from ending homelessness to high-speed transportation at this speaker-driven conference with a focus on Seattle’s changing future. 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Prices vary. McCaw Hall, 321 Mercer St.; 206.733.9725; tedxseattle.com

MUST YULE
Yulefest
(11/18-11/19) If Thor: Ragnarok didn’t satisfy your craving for all things Norse, Yulefest at Seattle’s Nordic Heritage Museum will. The 40th annual Yulefest features three stages of traditional and modern Nordic musicians and dancers, a heated tent packed with holiday treats and the Valhalla Beer Garden, plus raffles and auctions. Thor himself would be impressed. $5 admission, 10 a.m to 5 p.m; Nordic Heritage Museum, 3014 NW 67th St.; 206.789.5707; nordicmuseum.org

5 Dishes to Try in March

5 Dishes to Try in March

Worker-owned restaurants and community-driven kitchens shaping Seattle’s food scene.

Those in the restaurant industry have always faced unspoken challenges. Their stories are often kept behind the fold. Today, we’re hearing more personal accounts of wage theft, abuse, harassment, and a mountain of trauma in an industry built to nourish, celebrate, and commemorate.  How does one server, one restaurant take on changing the industry when…

Palace Kitchen Celebrates 30 Years

Palace Kitchen Celebrates 30 Years

The Belltown staple still feeds the city after 10 p.m.

After the last tickets come off the rail, floor mats are hauled out to be hosed down, oven hoods are scrubbed, aprons come untied, and someone counts the drawer. It’s a familiar ritual in restaurant cities everywhere. When the shift ends, cooks and servers go looking for a drink and something to eat. For three…

Protein Without the Pressure

Protein Without the Pressure

In her new cookbook, Seattle author and dietitian Rachael DeVaux keeps healthy eating grounded in real life.

Rachael DeVaux is not afraid of beef. That might sound obvious, but in a wellness culture still haunted by plain chicken breast and low-fat everything, her enthusiasm for grass-fed ground beef feels almost radical. The Seattle-based New York Times bestselling author, personal trainer, and founder of Rachael’s Good Eats has built a following of more than 3.5…

Restaurant Roundup: Nordic Cuisine and a Brazilian Brick-and-Mortar

Here’s what was served up recently in the Emerald City.

Monday nights are worth celebrating—you made it through the first day of the week, so why not treat yourself to a delicious meal? Unfortunately, but understandably, plenty of restaurants are closed. But at these spots, not only are the kitchens still serving, the quality doesn’t drop off post-weekend, providing a perfect opportunity for a surprise…
