MUST ILLUMINATE

Enchant Christmas Light Maze
(11/23–12/30) Safeco Field is getting a magical makeover this winter, transforming into the world’s largest Christmas-themed light maze. Search for Santa’s twinkling reindeer in the massive maze, glide on the ice-skating trail, shop for holiday gifts at the Christmas market and take pictures with Santa and Mrs. Claus. Times and prices vary. Safeco Field, 1250 First Ave. S; enchantchristmas.com

MUST TWEET

December Bird Walk
(12/5) December brings some beautiful migratory birds to the Pacific Northwest, and Lake Sammamish State Park will host its monthly bird walk to learn more about these feathered friends. Pack a thermos, layer up and waterproof your feet—the 2-3-mile walk can get muddy at times. All are welcome, from experts to birding beginners. 8 a.m. Free (Discover Pass required for parking). Lake Sammamish State Park, Issaquah, 2000 N.W. Sammamish Rd.; 360.902.8844; parks.state.wa.us

MUST MAKE

Urban Craft Uprising
(12/1–12/2) Seattle’s largest indie craft show hosts its winter show this weekend, and it’s a perfect stop for those looking for hand-crafted holiday gifts. Peruse and buy clothing, art, accessories, toys, housewares and more. Arrive early for a chance to receive a swag bag of goodies, and check out demos and book signings in the midst of your vendor-browsing. Times vary. Free. Seattle Center Exhibition Hall, Queen Anne, 301 Mercer St.; urbancraftuprising.com

MUST LOVE CLASSICAL

Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No. 2
(11/29, 12/1; 12/7) Rachmaninoff’s First Symphony had a disastrous premiere in 1897, but the 24-year-old Russian composer rebounded (thanks to therapy and even hypnosis) by writing one of the most popular and melodically opulent piano concertos ever. You have two chances to hear it in a week: played by Khatia Buniatishvili and the Seattle Symphony (11/29, 12/1), and by Robin McCabe and the University of Washington Symphony (12/7). 11/29, 12/1: Times and prices vary. Benaroya Hall, downtown, 200 University St.; 206.215.4747; seattlesymphony.org. 12/7: 7:30 p.m. Prices vary. Meany Theater in Meany Hall, University of Washington, 4140 George Washington Lane NE; 206.543.4880; music.washington.edu

MUST MAKE NOISE

Seahawks vs. 49ers
(12/2) After a shaky start to the season, the Seahawks are once again looking like serious contenders in the NFC. This rivalry game may not carry the Super Bowl implications it once did, but that doesn’t mean it won’t be an exciting Sunday night matchup. Bundle up in green and blue and scream at the top of your lungs: With playoff possibilities on the line, we may need our famous home-field advantage now more than ever. 5:20 p.m. kickoff. Prices vary. CenturyLink Field, 800 Occidental Ave. S; 888.635.4295; seahawks.com

Photo Essay: The Relief of the Moment

Words and photography by Nick Ward.

Photography tricks my ADHD brain into doing something borderline miraculous: It allows me to focus on exactly one thing at a time. When I press the shutter and hear that lovely little ka-chunk, the inner chatter winks out. I feel oddly connected to the moment by being outside it, observing through the frame instead of…
