Friday (2/6, 7 p.m.) Author Maria Semple will discuss her writing career and read from her best-selling novel Where’d You Go Bernadette, an intriguing comedy that pokes fun at the dynamics of Seattle family life. Tickets include a three-course dinner and a paperback copy of Semple’s book.

Science Fiction + Fantasy Short Film Festival Kicks Off

(2/6 to 2/8, times vary) The sibilant fest known as SFFSFF celebrates 10 years this month, with 29 sci-fi focused short films from France, Iceland, Malaysia, Brazil, the U.S. and elsewhere. Also on the bill is a special screening of dystopian cult film Escape from New York, accompanied by a live score.
