MUST HEEL

Seattle Kennel Club Dog Show
(3/9–3/10) Learn about Seattle’s competitive dog circuit at the annual Seattle Kennel Club’s dog show, the perfect chance to see the best of the canine world. Our local club is nationally known for its agility competitors, who navigate complex obstacle courses with just the simplest of commands. Tours of the arena, which include an explanation of the judging process, give spectators an inside scoop on the details of the show. Times and prices vary. CenturyLink Field Event Center, SoDo, 1000 Occidental Ave.; seattledogshow.org

MUST LOVE TWO WHEELS

Neighborhood Bike Swap
(3/10) Join your neighbors and friends to buy, sell and trade cycles and gear at Cascade Bicycle Club’s 24th annual event. Swap tips and tricks with vendors and scout for that one missing thing from your cycle collection. Don’t forget to bring a helmet for test rides, and your bike lock; bike parking is available, naturally. 9 a.m.–2 p.m. Prices vary. Magnuson Park, Hangar 30, Madison Park, 6310 NE 74th St.; 206.522.3222; cascade.org

MUST HEAR

Meshell Ndegeocello
(3/7–3/10) On top of her many albums (averaging about one every two years since 1993, her latest is last year’s spacey, soulful Ventriloquism) and collaborations (with everyone from John Mellencamp and the Rolling Stones to Chaka Khan and Madonna), this veteran bassist/rapper also works in the theatrical domain. Her 2016 multimedia music-theater piece, Can I Get a Witness? The Gospel of James Baldwin, a genre-bending performance she’ll stage at Jazz Alley, treats Baldwin’s reflections on race as a liturgy, a recited text that underpins her music to make something like—and something more than—a church service. Times vary. $40.50. Jazz Alley, downtown, 2033 Sixth Ave.; 206.441.9729

MUST DAZZLE

Gem and Jewelry Show
(3/8 – 3/10) Sparkling for over 50 years, InterGem, America’s longest running jewelry show is coming to the Emerald City. Forget the sky-high prices of retail — this is your opportunity to skip the middleman and meet hundreds of jewelry designers and wholesalers who offer stunning gems at bargain prices. Times and prices vary. Exhibition Hall, Seattle Center, 301 Mercer St. intergem.com

MUST LEARN

Washington Park Arboretum Free Public Tours
(3/7) Welcome spring this month by spending some time with experts from the University of Washington’s Botanic Gardens, which co-manages the arboretum with the city. On the first Thursday of every month, these plant gurus invite the public into the gardens to share history and season-specific gardening information, answer questions about the collection and more. Stop by and leave with thumbs a little greener. 11:30 a.m.–1 p.m. Free. Graham Visitors Center, Washington Park Arboretum, Montlake, 2300 Arboretum Drive E; 206.543.8616; uwbotanicgardens.org

Holiday Hunt in Pioneer Square

Holiday Hunt in Pioneer Square

A daily ornament drop turns December into a neighborhood-wide scavenger hunt.

The holidays tend to bring out the kid in all of us. And if opening presents and eating too many treats weren’t enough, there’s also a scavenger hunt in Seattle’s oldest neighborhood. Pioneer Square’s Holiday Ornament Scavenger Hunt has returned for its third year. Twenty-five handblown glass ornaments—all made at Glasshouse Studio—are hidden across 25…

Chit-Chat Kids

Chit-Chat Kids

Phone a friend.

Twenty years ago, before everyone walked around with a device in their pocket, kids used to call each other on a landline—often tethered to the kitchen in their home. It was a simpler time, when parents didn’t have to worry (nearly as much) about a potential predator contacting their child. Nowadays, things are different, which…

A Plate for Pickleball

A Plate for Pickleball

The design celebrates the state’s official sport. Additional plates are on the way.

Washington served up a new license plate last week, honoring the state sport of pickleball. In the works for three years, it’s the second of seven specialty plates to hit the market since getting approved by lawmakers earlier this year. “We’re thrilled to see our efforts become reality,” says Kate Van Gent, vice president of…

Seattle-Based Agency Brings Real Voices to NBC’s New Campaign

DNA&STONE built the project around candid conversations to understand what audiences want from reporting.

“I turned off news altogether. I want to be able to form my own opinions. Just tell the truth.” These lines open NBC News’ new national campaign, a 60-second ad that drifts over forests, farms, neighborhoods, and cityscapes while Americans talk about how worn out they feel by the news. The landscape carries the conversation…
