The city’s best summer fest is back, featuring stellar big names (Elvis Costello! Mavis Staples! The Afghan Whigs!), killer local bands (The Head and the Heart! Pickwick! La Luz!) and cool “words and ideas,” from The Failure Variety Show (artists celebrating major fails) to Stephin Merritt (of the Magnetic Fields) talking to arts editor Brangien Davis about Scrabble tactics.

Kick off Seahawks Season with an NFL Fun Run
Monday (9/1, 7:30 a.m.) — Celebrate our Super Bowl champions with this 5K NFL Kickoff Run, which starts outside CenturyLink Field on Occidental Avenue, winds down First Avenue South, then finishes on the sidelines at CenturyLink Field.

SAM Displays Contemporary Art from India
(8/30 to 2/15/15, times vary) — From the collection of ex-Microsoftie Sanjay Parthasarathy and wife Malini Balakrishnan comes a fresh perspective on today’s India, seen in photographs and sculptures by contemporary Indian artists, such as the hyperrealist, wildly hued photos by Nandini Valli Muthiah.

Historic Tall Ships Come to Kirkland
(8/30 to 9/2, 2 p.m.) — Set sail aboard one of several mighty vessels and experience the booming cannons, close-quarters maneuvers and a taste of 18th century maritime life. This three-hour adventure invites passengers to raise the sails, taunt opponents and sing a sea shanty.
