!–paging_filter–pLead singer for longstanding Seattle band Presidents of the United States of America (PUSA), Chris Ballew is also known as kindie rocker Caspar Babypants. This month, PUSA releases a new album and celebrates Presidents Day with two local shows: 2/15 at Showbox and 2/16 at The Triple Door.brstrongbrLOCATION/strong: Ballew’s tiny home recording studio in West SeattlebrstrongBallew’s DRINK:/strong Ginger tea *No actual coffee consumed.brbrstrongNG:/strong PUSA turns 21 this year—how do you keep the old songs fresh?brstrongCB:/strong I imagine songs as living things that mutate and change. There’s no fixed version.brbrstrongNG:/strong What can fans expect with this new PUSA album?brstrongCB:/strong A lot of shoe gazing. A lot of anger. [laughs] Fans can expect the sound of the Presidents finally coming full circle and not caring about anything except pleasing ourselves. brbrstrongNG:/strong Is there a quintessential PUSA song?brstrongCB:/strong I would say “Lump.” I’ve never performed “Lump” and not been completely present in the moment. It’s like playing it for the first time every single time. brbrstrongNG:/strong You are a killer front man—where did you learn how to lead a rock band? brstrongCB:/strong Well, there’s that Malcolm Gladwell 10,000 hours thing. Plus, I’ve become a better front man since I started performing for children, because kids will interrupt me in the middle of a song to tell me about their new jacket, and I just stop and let things flow. brbrstrongNG:/strong If you could rework/redo a moment or a time in your life, what would it be? brstrongCB:/strong I would not have quit the Presidents in late 1997. I would take a break, not break up. brbrstrongNG/strong: Are Chris Ballew and Caspar Babypants one and the same? brstrongCB: /strongPretty much. The main difference is that Chris Ballew of the Presidents gets to balance innocence and innuendo. Caspar just has the innocence. But the little glowing core of telling stories about characters, or food I like, is the same. brbrstrongNG:/strong Has there been a creative high point in your life? brstrongCB:/strong Right now. The Presidents are alive, and the Caspar Babypants thing is just an unstoppable volcano of material. brbrstrongNG:/strong Who’s your favorite audience? brstrongCB:/strong A 10:30 a.m. library audience. brbrstrongNG:/strong What’s your best quality? brstrongCB:/strong I work really hard to be generous with music. I wanna give people songs that are useful and can brighten their day. brbrNancy Guppy showcases Seattle artists on her show, Art Zone (a href=”http://www.seattlechannel.org/artzone” target=”_blank”seattlechannel.org/artzone/a)./p

A daily ornament drop turns December into a neighborhood-wide scavenger hunt.

The holidays tend to bring out the kid in all of us. And if opening presents and eating too many treats weren’t enough, there’s also a scavenger hunt in Seattle’s oldest neighborhood. Pioneer Square’s Holiday Ornament Scavenger Hunt has returned for its third year. Twenty-five handblown glass ornaments—all made at Glasshouse Studio—are hidden across 25…

Chit-Chat Kids

Chit-Chat Kids

Phone a friend.

Twenty years ago, before everyone walked around with a device in their pocket, kids used to call each other on a landline—often tethered to the kitchen in their home. It was a simpler time, when parents didn’t have to worry (nearly as much) about a potential predator contacting their child. Nowadays, things are different, which…

The design celebrates the state’s official sport. Additional plates are on the way.

Washington served up a new license plate last week, honoring the state sport of pickleball. In the works for three years, it’s the second of seven specialty plates to hit the market since getting approved by lawmakers earlier this year. “We’re thrilled to see our efforts become reality,” says Kate Van Gent, vice president of…

DNA&STONE built the project around candid conversations to understand what audiences want from reporting.

“I turned off news altogether. I want to be able to form my own opinions. Just tell the truth.” These lines open NBC News’ new national campaign, a 60-second ad that drifts over forests, farms, neighborhoods, and cityscapes while Americans talk about how worn out they feel by the news. The landscape carries the conversation…
