In 2014, we named Seattle rock band The Great Um–which features our contributing writer Jake Uitti on bass, Caleb Thompson on vocals and guitar, Joel Myers on guitar and Dominic Cortese on drums–one of the 50 Bands Rocking Seattle Music Right Now. Their 5-track album Everybody Now was a must-listen for rock ’n’ roll with echoes from White Album-era Beatles to The Raconteurs.”

Now the band has dropped a new video for “Uptown,” a high-energy tune off the album Never Been There, which was released this past Friday at the Sunset Tavern. (The band jammed out that night with Prom Queen and Branden Daniel and the Chics.)

In the video–directed, edited and produced by guitarist Joel Myers and his girlfriend Ashley Campbell–the gents are braving the freezing rain and icy water in nothing more than swim trunks and the occasional cold-weather accessory. “It was so cold that day but the comradery of the band got us through when the hot coffee that quickly went cold didn’t help much,” Uitti says. “What can we say? We just wanted to go to the beach.” (Special appearance by a pup named Winston.)

Photo Essay: The Relief of the Moment

Words and photography by Nick Ward.

Photography tricks my ADHD brain into doing something borderline miraculous: It allows me to focus on exactly one thing at a time. When I press the shutter and hear that lovely little ka-chunk, the inner chatter winks out. I feel oddly connected to the moment by being outside it, observing through the frame instead of…
