Must Hear
Outdoor Music Concerts

(Dates and times vary) — For an urban lunchtime escape, don’t miss the free Out to Lunch concert series around downtown, including the Portland Cello Project in Occidental Square Park (7/18). Or spend a magical evening at the Music on the Green Summer Concert Series at Salish Lodge, featuring a gourmet picnic, wine and the sweet sounds of alt-country singer Sera Cahoone (7/24, 7:30 p.m.)

Must See
An Evening of Short Plays at ACT

(7/18 to 8/17, times vary) — A magician’s assistant levitates, an alien with special powers is enslaved by a magician, and savvy New Yorkers (magically?) hide their infidelities: Seattle’s R. Hamilton Wright directs an evening of short plays by Steve Martin, Sam Shepard, and Woody Allen that examine wonder, fantasy and surprise as presented by three celebrated authors.

Must Screen
Outdoor Movies Around Town

(7/17, & 7/26, times vary) — The outdoor movie season heats up in July, and we have a few flicks picked out already: Despicable Me 2 at Redhook Brewery (7/17); The Lego Movie at Magnuson Park (7/17) and The Princess Bride at the Seattle Center (7/26), because watching movies outside on a warm summer night is like twoo wuv.

Must Get Tickets
Seattle magazine’s Red, White & Brew

Friday (July 25, 6 to 9 p.m.) — If you missed last year’s spectacular tasting event, you have another chance. Red, White & Brew, a fete jam-packed with Washington wines, beer from local breweries, cocktails from Hendrick’s Gin and snacks galore, is back for the third year, this time taking place on the rooftop terrace at the Fremont Foundry.

Must Shop
A Survival Guide to Shopping the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale

Friday (7/18 to 8/4, times vary) — Longtime sale shoppers have already plotted a strategy for braving the crowds—and there will be crowds—at Nordy’s big blowout, but we have a few of our own tips to share.

Holiday Hunt in Pioneer Square

Holiday Hunt in Pioneer Square

A daily ornament drop turns December into a neighborhood-wide scavenger hunt.

The holidays tend to bring out the kid in all of us. And if opening presents and eating too many treats weren’t enough, there’s also a scavenger hunt in Seattle’s oldest neighborhood. Pioneer Square’s Holiday Ornament Scavenger Hunt has returned for its third year. Twenty-five handblown glass ornaments—all made at Glasshouse Studio—are hidden across 25…

Chit-Chat Kids

Chit-Chat Kids

Phone a friend.

Twenty years ago, before everyone walked around with a device in their pocket, kids used to call each other on a landline—often tethered to the kitchen in their home. It was a simpler time, when parents didn’t have to worry (nearly as much) about a potential predator contacting their child. Nowadays, things are different, which…

A Plate for Pickleball

A Plate for Pickleball

The design celebrates the state’s official sport. Additional plates are on the way.

Washington served up a new license plate last week, honoring the state sport of pickleball. In the works for three years, it’s the second of seven specialty plates to hit the market since getting approved by lawmakers earlier this year. “We’re thrilled to see our efforts become reality,” says Kate Van Gent, vice president of…

Seattle-Based Agency Brings Real Voices to NBC’s New Campaign

DNA&STONE built the project around candid conversations to understand what audiences want from reporting.

“I turned off news altogether. I want to be able to form my own opinions. Just tell the truth.” These lines open NBC News’ new national campaign, a 60-second ad that drifts over forests, farms, neighborhoods, and cityscapes while Americans talk about how worn out they feel by the news. The landscape carries the conversation…
