The arrival of autumn is imminent and while we’re loving this late summer sunshine, our sartorial second sense is moving on to the colors, fabrics, layers and looks of fall fashion. We e-chatted with local gal made good, Trina Turk on what she has in store for the rainy season.

Seattle magazine: Did growing up in the gray Pacific Northwest influence your love of color?
Trina Turk: The biggest influence the Pacific NW had on my love of color was not so much the gray of the climate, but my interests at the time. I attended high school in Bellevue, and then went to the UW to study apparel design. During college, I was very into new wave music, and spent hours thrift shopping to pull together looks for nights out. The combination of constant thrifting and sewing for courses at the U created a world in which I was learning about textiles, and that involved a lot of color. At that time, I rejected the bright late 60s and early 70s color palette that defines the Trina Turk brand today. I was more into the classic new wave colors: red, black, pink, grey, white and silver.

SM: Who are your personal style icons?
TT: My style icons are Iris Apfel, Millicent Rogers, Audrey Hepburn, Mary Tyler Moore in the 70s, Jackie O, Gloria Steinem, Diana Vreeland and Peggy Moffatt.

SM: What is the best and worst advice you have every received?
TT: The best advice I have ever received is “don’t take yourself too seriously.” The worst advice I have ever received is to get my hair permed. Never again.

SM: Which trend do you love and which trend do you wish would go away?
TT: Trend I love = mixing prints, patterns and textures and layering pattern on pattern. My least favorite is the trend of wearing exercise clothing as a look for the day. I like the idea of mixing active influences in with fashion pieces, but I am not a fan of stretchy yoga wear from head to toe instead of something that yes—requires a bit more effort.

SM: What can we expect for fall from Trina Turk?
TT: Our fall collections were inspired by a drive west on Sunset Blvd through LA from Silverlake to the sea. Juxtaposed patterns and textures reflect the pulse of the city. The multicultural vibe of Los Angeles allows uncensored styling with mineral grays, taupe, and navy popped by the loganberry and burnt orange shades of a sunset sky. Plus, in September we will head to NYC for Fashion Week to present our Spring 2015 Pop Art Flower Mart collection.
