Red Tricycle Recommends: Seattle’s Kid Friendly Indoor Market

By Sara Billups September 15, 2011

When seasonal neighborhood farmers markets end in early fall and rainy days revisit the Emerald City, the indoor shops at Capitol Hill’s indoor Melrose Market offer families the chance to discover fresh food and artisan goods and the opportunity to grab lunch inside a recently restored warehouse. With Doug Fir beams and exposed brick, the 21,000-square-foot mini version of San Francisco’s famed Ferry Building Marketplace is home to nine Seattle-based businesses. Melrose Market houses several shops that are perfect weekend stops for families:

Homegrown Sustainable Sandwich Shop
The second location of Homegrown opened in Melrose Market last year and serves up seasonal squash and snap pea pesto sandwiches for grown-ups and bluffernutter (homemade marshmallow fluff, bacon, and peanut butter on potato bread) sandwiches for kids.

The Calf and Kid Artisan Cheese Shop
The Calf and Kid offers local morsels and free samples from proprietor Sheri LaVigne. Expect truffle cheese, Caveman Blue, and more Northwest-produced wedges and rounds tastefully displayed at one of Seattle’s only specialty cheese shops.

Marigold and Mint
Started as a two-acre organic farm and orchard growing flowers and edibles in Carnation, Washington, Marigold and Mint’s store in Melrose Market provides city dwellers with freshly cut stems of sunflower, smokebush, and hydrangeas, alongside small-batch chocolate, fine paper and fabric, and ceramics.

Butter Home
Climb up a small staircase to the quaint Butter Home, nestled in a Melrose Market loft. The retail space features highly curated furniture, beautiful Dorothy Cheng jewelry, and cheeky gifts like giant toy ants and mustache magnets.

Taylor Shellfish Farms
The brand new Taylor Shellfish Farms store receives deliveries of fresh area mussels, scallops, and oysters to Melrose Market several times a week. Kiddos will love gawking at the mysteriously shaped geoducks, and grownups can pick a bag of manila clams to throw in linguini for dinner.
