Harmoniously fusing Seattle’s love for cycling and its penchant for DIY undertakings, Scenic Drive E. Pike Factory (611 E Pike St.; 206.300.8799; scenicdrivefactory.com) is best described as a cycling paraphernalia workspace. Open since October and run by Nikki Mazzei and Rachel Ravitch (of Seattle’s cycling dance troupe the Bicycle Belles), Scenic Drive sells handmade bicycling accessories and clothing—such as the supercute Caravan Clutch ($50), which attaches to handlebars. Also cool: sewing machine rentals! Novices can command Kenmores ($7/hour) to hem unruly jeans, and experienced seamsters can use the Singer industrial machine or the Pfaff serger machine ($15/hour) for larger projects, such as constructing an art-inspired quilt. Sewing lessons are available for needle newbies—the hourlong Intro to Machine Sewing ($25) comes highly recommended—so every Seattleite’s dream of crafting matching bike and helmet cozies is ever closer to reality.
