Long the exclusive purview of professional groomers, the power to beautify dogs is being made readily available to mere mortals with the advent of do-it-yourself dog salon Rex (1402 12th Ave.; 206.682.3941; rexseattle.com). Scheduled to open this month, the welcoming space at the base of  Trace Lofts on Capitol Hill features reclaimed and recycled materials, such as a giant antique scale and old wooden beams (used for human seating), plus eight custom-designed self-service wash bays. A joint venture of Seattle entrepreneur Jeff Judas and Pb Elemental architecture firm cofounder and partner Chris Pardo, the space is designed more like a high-end spa than a den for dogs. Rex will offer self-service dog washes ($20–$22), complete with natural shampoos and plush towels, as well as professional grooming ($50 and up) for those who’d rather drop off the dog and dash next door for a treat at High 5 Pie. The retail section offers high-quality canine supplies, including food by local Darwin’s Natural Pet Products and Blue Dog Bakery. Check the website for information on canine-themed events, including pet first-aid classes and, of course, “yappy hours.”
