In just five years, Joy Egbejimba has taken Nuciano, her Seattle-based handbag brand (available at Visette Boutique, Capitol Hill, 307 E Pike St.; 206.928.9898), from relative obscurity to a position of prestige as a must-have accessory for Hollywood red carpets and fashion’s it girls.

The Nigerian-born former model parlays her design sensibility into architectural, colorful and sometimes twinkling designs. While Egbejimba sources the leather and other materials from Nigeria, she draws inspiration from the Pacific Northwest’s scenery and environment. “A handbag is something that defines a woman’s style, her journey and story, so it shouldn’t be worn for just one season,” she says. Although coveted by the rich and famous, not all of Egbejimba’s pieces require a celebrity’s salary: Prices for her signature leather handbags start at $350, while her Swarovski-crystal-covered clutches start at $550.
