Seattle’s Ebbet’s Field Flannels Seen in the Movie 42

2013 marks the 25th year that Jerry Cohen has been making authentic reproduction sports jerseys in Seattle for his business Ebbet’s Field Flannels, which has a small storefront, open to the public, in Pioneer Square. With a focus on non-major league teams, like the pre-1958 Pacific Coast League and the Negro league (Seattle had one, the Steelheads, read more about them here), Cohen and his team use the same wool-blend flannel that was used during the 1960s and can make any historic baseball jersey you can think of, with or without a number or a name (baseball trivia buffs will be interested to know that numbers were included on all shirts after 1929 and that names were not usually found on shirts from the flannel era).

In addition to the celebrities and former players like Spike Lee, David Letterman and Yankee legends Yogi Berra and Whitey Ford who have donned Ebbett’s Field Flannels, you can see the company’s handiwork on the big screen: Ebbet’s Field made all the minor league and Negro league uniforms for 42, the Jackie Robinson biopic in theaters now.
