Maybe penning the great American novel is out of your reach, but there is a way to help to birth a bonafide book. Historic Seattle (First Hill, Dearborn House, 1117 Minor Ave.; 206.622.6952) is looking to raise a last $20,000 or so to cover the publishing costs for its book exploring the cultural and architectural history of Seattle’s First Hill. The book, part of the preservation group’s 40th-anniversary celebration, will feature some 200 photos (perhaps the Hofius residence pictured below) to tell the colorful tale of the Hill’s past. The book’s release date is set for November (complete with a launch event at Town Hall), but it’s still not too late to make a page-turning impact. If you’re interested in donating, put in a call by the end of April to Brooke Best, 206.622.5444 (extension 221), or e-mail her at brookeb@historicseattle.org

It all started with a bout of pandemic boredom. Like many, when COVID-19 hit, recent graduate Carrie Xiao found herself stuck at home, with extra time on her hands. One day, while scrolling social media, she discovered tufting: a textile manufacturing technique that creates a garment or rug with a “pile,” or raised surface. After…

Looking to build a home to welcome family and friends, one Kirkland couple turns to a sister to design a modern house with influences from the wife’s Thai heritage.

For many years, when homeowners planned to build or remodel, architects and designers advised them to think first and foremost about resale value. From the number of bedrooms to the materials, appliances, and finishes in the kitchens and bathrooms, homes were often treated solely as an investment, with an eye to future sales. In recent…

Anders and his wife, Valerie, had purchased a five-acre compound on the isolated western edge of the island for its mesmerizing view, a subject he knew something about. As a member of the first human…
