First Thursday art walk: Joey Veltkamp
Thursday (3/3) – Seattle artist and local art blogger Joey Veltkamp has a well-documented owl obsession (his last show featured more than 30 papier-mâché owls), but now he’s on to something new—ghosts. For this show, he’s fired more than 20 ceramic spooks, using paint and resin to give a glazing effect. If you haven’t yet encountered the endearing work of this rising star, it’s high time. Seattle Symphony: Tribute to Cole Porter
Thursdsay – Sunday (3/3–3/6) – Dear Cole Porter: “Every Time We Say Goodbye,” I think “You’d Be So Nice to Come Home To.” “Let’s Face It”—your music is “Something to Shout About.” I heard the Seattle Symphony was doing a tribute to you and I said, “Well, Did You Evah?” because, as you know, “I Get a Kick Out of You.” I can’t explain it—it’s “Just One of Those Things”—but “You Do Something to Me,” and I could listen to you “All Through the Night.” And Marvin Hamlisch is conducting? Emerald City Comcon
Friday – Sunday (3/4–3/6) – In addition to being home to a gazillion comic book artists, stores and fans, Seattle also hosts the hugley attended Emerald City Comicon. At this year’s ninth annual event, confirmed guests include William Shatner, Bruce Boxleitner (aka the original Tron), Seattle Badass author Ben Thompson (see page 26), more than 100 writers and artists, and plenty of costumed crusaders in the crowd.; Times and prices vary. Damien Jurado, Viva Voce and Loch Lomond
Saturday (3/5) – It’s a Northwest indie fest featuring three local faves: Seattle native Damien Jurado, known for beautiful alt-folk ballads; Portland-based Viva Voce, beloved for its blend of rock, folk and psychedelic riffs; and fellow Rose City dwellers Loch Lomond, known for its innovative use of the musical saw and theremin, whose new album dropped in February. 8 p.m. $12. Dahlia Workshop’s Biscuit Bar
What happens when the grandmaster of Pacific Northwest cuisine Tom Douglas goes into the biscuit making business? You get creations like a perfectly crisped and crave-able fried chicken, tobasco black pepper gravy with fried egg sandwich. Hugged between flaky butter biscuits that are surprisingly up to the challenge of keeping your breakfast together, we can’t think of a better way to start this Saturday or Sunday morning.
