!–paging_filter–pAs emSeattle /emMagazine’s editor at large, I get to do the dirty jobs sometimes. Like this week, I’m up in the Canadian Rockies. We came up from Seattle to Vancouver then on to Banff via a Canadian a href=”http://www.rockymountaineer.com/en_CA_BC/routes_and_packages?gclid=CNfT3…” target=”_blank”sightseeing train called the Rocky Mountaineer/a: think domes, cars and gourmet food while cruising on rails through the wilderness. It was a smooth and splendid ride. I’m also spending time in Banff, Jasper and Lake Louise because, well, someone has to do it. This morning, we started the day with elk sausage and bison meat at the Buffalo Mountain Lodge, then took the Banff gondola to get fabulous views of the mountains, then a dip in the local hot springs. Now, lest you think it’s all cushy, please note that on this expedition we have been in some dangerous places. You might be afraid of grizzlies or rutting Bighorn sheep, but the real danger is your own feet. Canada is a good place, apparently, for a trip, as these photos show.brbrimg src=”/sites/default/files/newfiles/skip_1_web.jpg” style=”vertical-align: middle;” height=”533″ width=”400″brbrSeattle emmagazine’s editor at large, Knute Berger. REI brings back guided travel, betting that memories matter more than stuff.

In my household, with two young boys under the age of five, we often have to remind them to take things back. Did you really mean to tell dad that his dinner isn’t good? You might want to take that back. Did your brother deserve to be hit? Let’s rethink that one. Extreme analogies aside,…

Northwest Enters Winter After Warmest Fall on Record

Unseasonably high temperatures and rain instead of snow have pushed regional snowpack to record lows for this point in the season.

Across the Northwest, a record-warm fall and lack of snowpack going into the winter is putting more drought pressure on Oregon, Idaho, Washington and western Montana. Despite record rain in western Washington recently, and earlier this year in central and southern Oregon, the showers are filling up already overdrawn reservoirs in many areas, scientists said…
