The Pulse: Red Sun Season

Skylar Diggins on point and Seattle’s best egg tart

By Sarah Stackhouse September 5, 2025

People walk down a cobblestone alley at sunset, bathed in the glow of Red Sun Season, with flowers in the foreground, sticker-covered signs, and storefronts on either side, including The Pulse coffee shop and a comedy theater.

It’s been a strange mix lately—a little wildfire haze plus maybe some fog in the mornings, warm afternoons, and skies that turn cinematic at dusk. The smoky sunsets and that weird red glow at dinnertime are both gorgeous and a little creepy. The season feels like it’s starting to tip, with school back and October on the horizon (my favorite month), but there’s still plenty of time to get the last wiggles of summer out.

Here’s what’s happening around town…

Seattle’s best egg tart lives at Pike Place Market, courtesy of Lands of Origin.

Filson’s fall women’s line is so rugged. It makes me want to shoe horses or at least pretend I’m fly fishing.

Indian ribs at Spice Waala are something to write home about.

KEXP had Gordi live in the studio, dreamy electro-acoustic pop at its finest.

I can’t stop thinking about Dan Pelosi’s new book—he’s hilarious and makes everything feel fun.

Halloween’s coming, which means it’s time to hit up Goodwill. I’m leaning “lady who panic-bought a cape.” Don’t you love the “mundane costumes” that surface in Japan every year?

R-Day is tomorrow! Head to Georgetown to celebrate the beer that put Seattle on the beer map—always best with a lime.

George Saunders is coming to Seattle this spring. I could hang on every word he says—so much earned wisdom.

Loving these hot and sweaty Caffe Vita throwbacks.

A Labubu doll bust in Seattle recovered $500,000 in fakes.

Schilling Cider’s Excelsior Imperial Mango is now the only climate neutral fruited cider in the U.S. Cheers to that!

Doechii’s coming to WAMU Theater.

And if you’re dreaming about outdoor kitchens, this Argentinian quincho is swoony.

A Different Way To Cycle

A Different Way To Cycle

Motoring madness.

It’s no secret that Pacific Northwesterners love to cycle. You can see them pedaling to and from work, along bike trails, and between neighborhoods almost any time of year. On November 28, Seattle’s Museum of History and Industry (MOHAI) is turning a lens on another form of cycling with its latest exhibition, Kickstands Up! 125…

The E-Bike That Saved Our Mornings

The E-Bike That Saved Our Mornings

A simple shift in the school commute turned into the best part of the day.

Ah, the dreaded school morning, when getting your kids out the door is a Herculean effort. Sometimes it feels like getting them to eat breakfast, brush teeth, and get dressed is harder than moving a rock uphill. But never—not once—since we got an e-bike have our kids not wanted to hop on and zoom off…

Are Women More Trusting?

Not so much...

Who to trust is a daily decision, and those decision-making moments present themselves so often that we may not realize we’re making them. When someone speaks to me in a line waiting for a movie, I generally don’t think they are secretly planning to steal my purse. When someone gives me directions, I don’t think…
