Best Beach Town: Edmonds

By Seattle Mag November 10, 2025

Close-up of a pebbled shoreline in a charming beach town, with gentle waves, clear blue water, and distant mountains—a scene worthy of art under a partly cloudy sky.

This article originally appeared in the November/December 2025 issue of Seattle magazine.

We might be a little biased, since two Seattle magazine staffers grew up in Edmonds and two of them live there now, but this little city on the sound is absolutely a Northwest gem. Long a sleepy enclave best known for its ferry to Kingston (or as the residence of travel writer Rick Steves), Edmonds is all grown up and now a destination for young families and retirees alike.

With its quaint downtown full of independent shops and restaurants—and a bustling Saturday market in the spring and summer months—there’s always somewhere to pop in and explore.

In 2018, Edmonds was the first city in Washington to be named a Certified Creative District. It’s full of public installations, theaters with live performances, art walks, galleries, and nearly a dozen murals painted on the sides of buildings and in alleyways in the downtown core. Head a handful of blocks west and you’ll find the Cascadia Art Museum, whose focus is on regional art.

Just past that are long stretches of beach where you can kick off your shoes and stroll, roll out a blanket and chill, or, if you prefer your beach time a little less interactive, there are several seafood-forward restaurants perched to take advantage of the water views.

About Best of the Best

Everyone loves a winner. And when it comes to Seattle favorites, there’s no shortage of opinions on which places, spaces, and bites deserve top honors. This year, we did things a little differently—our staff weighed in, debating and voting to determine the best of the best across the city. We also ran our annual Readers’ Choice poll for comparison (and yes, there was overlap in just one category). Here’s to celebrating all the winners, no matter who cast the vote.

From the Archives: In Search Of The Best… And The Elusive

A 1970 Bigfoot feature captures Seattle’s quirky spirit and our ongoing curiosity about what might be hiding in plain sight.

In August of 1970, Seattle magazine ran a story that, by today’s standards, was gloriously unhinged. It asked, tongue fully in cheek, whether the legendary Sasquatch might be real and lamenting its own demise. Did the recent Patterson-Gimlin film, depicting an unidentified, ape-like biped walking out of the woods in Northern California, show the long-lost…
