Mount Rainier makes a mighty fine backdrop for indie films
Rainier Independent Film Festival
Where: The fourth annual Rainier Independent Film Festival, June 11–13 ($5–$40; rainierfilmfest.com) in the Ashford Valley, about five miles from the Nisqually entrance to Mount Rainier National Park.
Why: This intimate film fest offers the chance to meet and mingle with film industry folks—including Seattle’s Warren Etheredge, of The Warren Report—in the forested shadow of Mount Rainier. Experience: More than two dozen flicks screened in three distinctive venues: a yurt (at the Wellspring Spa & Retreat), a historic elementary school built in the 1920s and the rustic Nisqually Lodge.
Stretch Your Legs: Grab a trail map at the renovated Paradise Jackson Visitor Center inside the park and take a hike between screenings.
Getting There: Get yourself to Puyallup, then take Highway 161 south for roughly 25 miles. Go left on Mountain Highway East (which becomes National Park Highway) and continue for about 18 miles.
