Best Team Mascot: Doppler

Ask 10 Seattleites what they think Doppler is, and the answers will vary from animal to monster to something about radar or wave frequencies. None of them would be totally wrong, and it all adds to the mystique of the Seattle Storm’s lovable, furry mascot. Named Doppler for obvious, rainy reasons, the yellow-and-maroon creature is often seen with a cup anemometer on its head (used for measuring wind speed in meteorology). Despite a constant large-format grin, Doppler takes its job seriously, helping the crowds cheer on Seattle’s leading ladies as they show their opponents how it’s done on the basketball court.

About Best of the Best

This year, we did things a little differently—our staff weighed in, debating and voting to determine the best of the best across the city. We also ran our annual Readers’ Choice poll for comparison (and yes, there was overlap in just one category). Here’s to celebrating all the winners, no matter who cast the vote.

Did the recent Patterson-Gimlin film, depicting an unidentified, ape-like biped walking out of the woods in Northern California, show the long-lost…
