In May, a women's rowing team in matching uniforms and sunglasses rows a yellow boat at full speed on a river, with trees and a bridge in the background.

The sun’s out and the pollen is rude, but it’s almost Cinco de Mayo. My grandpa was Mexican and ran a restaurant, so we always mark the day with a party at our place — carnitas and Pacifico. I’ll be cooking. The kids will be slamming horchata. What about you? Are you celebrating?

Here’s what’s going on around town…

The Windermere Cup is back on Saturday, May 3. One of my favorite Seattle traditions. Always magic.

Seattle musician (and Garfield High School alum) Kassa Overall just won a $525,000 Doris Duke Artist Award. Huge honor, and very well deserved.

Low tides this week mean sea slugs, starfish, and an excuse to crouch down and stare at rocks.

Jerry Seinfeld is coming to Seattle. So are Kendrick Lamar and SZA. Get on those tickets.

Anthony’s just featured a young fisherwoman who owns her own boat — and is terrified of the ocean. Icon.

The city’s best tacos got mapped just in time for Cinco de Mayo. Pack Tums.

Lady M just dropped this pretty rose mille crêpes cake. We’re listening.

HBCU tours are taking local Black students across the country and bringing back big dreams. Love to see it.

A jazzy 1930s Tudor is for sale in Capitol Hill with wood beams, lake views, and a secret speakeasy. Go ahead, snoop the photos.

The Ballard Opera Man is retiring after 40 years. I want to be known as Seattle Opera Man. We should all be working towards this life goal.

Always hire the librarians.

Starter homes are now $1 million in many Seattle suburbs. Good luck out there.

We’re offering discounts and apologies to Canadian tourists to woo them back. We love you, Canada

This roundup of outdoor bars and restaurants makes me want to call in sick until September. What do you think, did they get all of them?

Yes, Seattleites are out here gardening naked again. Happy holidays?

And if you haven’t picked something out for Mother’s Day yet, we’ve got you: Gift guide here.

Fave Five: Little Winter Escapes

Places to go when the weather turns cold.

Winter is a time to reset. The holidays vanish overnight, leaving frigid mornings and fewer lights in the windows. And it’s almost as if the sun has a lampshade over it—which I don’t mind. We all need a break from the bright overheads. Still, we are fighting the urge to hibernate. Maybe that means tea…

When the News Feels Like Too Much

When the News Feels Like Too Much

A moment to pause and take care of ourselves right now.

The recent news out of Minneapolis has been hard to watch. No matter where you live, it’s heavy and destabilizing. Staying engaged when things start to feel hopeless—and when it feels like there’s nothing you can do—is really difficult. At our staff meeting today, we talked about how many of us are feeling this same…
