The Pulse: Snow on the Horizon

A new MoPOP exhibition, Memorial Stadium’s future, and Pete Carroll in dad mode

Hey there, how’s it going? It’s been a busy week at the office. We’re gearing up for the next print issue — think stunning homes and killer photos. Also, they’re calling for light snow this weekend and possibly into Monday. Any bets on if it’ll actually happen? It’s been a dry winter, so any precipitation is probably good news.

Black History Month: Black Beyond is opening this weekend at MoPOP — very excited about this one.

This history of Filson’s “Mackinaw Cruiser” has me fascinated. Now I want one.

DEI work in Seattle is facing setbacks. Still, there’s a lot to be proud of in how we’ve built healthier workplaces.

Good news about affordable housing in King County.

If it’s a craft beer trend, Seattle probably did it first. Just sayin’.

I got into Neko Case during the pandemic — her powerful lyrics and soaring voice got me through it. I just picked up her new memoir, and this Town Hall event sounds like a good time — Cheryl Waters always asks the best questions..

Big plans for Memorial Stadium. New funding and construction partnerships are making it happen. Samantha Holloway — one of our Most Influential leaders — played a key role.

Lisa Dabek is so inspiring and she’s doing it all right here at Woodland Park Zoo.

This math conference in Seattle thrilled me, and the photos blew me away — especially the first one.

Filing these solo activities away for a future ‘me’ day.

How’s everyone feeling about Pete Carroll these days? I’ve always liked his dad-energy on the sidelines.

There’s been renewed buzz about this Twin Peaks tour since Lynch’s death. I’ve never been, but it does seem like a fun time. Twede’s Cafe has even set up a small memorial out front, and fans have been leaving items.

Seattle’s tech industry and the rapid expansion of data centers are keeping things moving in a big way

Adding Elita to my reading list

This new SIFF series looks great. Last year’s Most Influential Kenji Lopez-Alt is kicking off the first event — anyone going?

Reader Comment of the Week:
And it’s really no surprise that it comes from our story on Starbucks’ new changes, including ceramic mugs for in-house coffee. Oh, how we forget that Starbucks helped put Seattle on the coffee map… though clearly, there’s always room for improvement.

Fave Five: Little Winter Escapes

Places to go when the weather turns cold.

Winter is a time to reset. The holidays vanish overnight, leaving frigid mornings and fewer lights in the windows. And it’s almost as if the sun has a lampshade over it—which I don’t mind. We all need a break from the bright overheads. Still, we are fighting the urge to hibernate. Maybe that means tea…

When the News Feels Like Too Much

When the News Feels Like Too Much

A moment to pause and take care of ourselves right now.

The recent news out of Minneapolis has been hard to watch. No matter where you live, it’s heavy and destabilizing. Staying engaged when things start to feel hopeless—and when it feels like there’s nothing you can do—is really difficult. At our staff meeting today, we talked about how many of us are feeling this same…
