The Pulse: Twilight Season

A denim party and one very chill sloth

Everyone’s talking about spring. But Seattle — this is it for now. Gray and wet, with some sun speckled in. This is what you’re built for — slick streets and layered jackets. The city is at its most handsome when it’s moody. The cherry blossoms are just starting to show, soft little rebels that they are, the rain is relentless, and somewhere, a vampire is thriving. I wouldn’t have it any other way.

Here’s what’s going on around town…

Have you seen the college basketball mascots at the top of the Space Needle? They’re living their best mascot lives. Our editor is playing hooky at the games today.

How are you all feeling about this plan for Third Avenue? Feels like a step, but it’s a long street.

Slothy, the 8-foot stuffed sloth in the tree off I-5, has been removed “for safety.” Which raises the obvious question: Is he okay? Where is he now?

MOHAI’s Denim After Dark party is coming up. If there’s ever a time to rock a Canadian tuxedo, this is it.

Macrina has subscription boxes now. One word: yes.

Big news: The City Council voted to lift the ban on housing in the Stadium District.

South Lake Union got spruced up with new sidewalk chalk art from Urban ArtWorks. It’s likely washed away after last night, but wow, it was beautiful.

True Loves is the hottest live band in Seattle. Book a table before everyone else does.

Kulay the warty pig got a spa day in the sun and frankly she deserves this every day.

Bob Ferguson’s top aide just resigned over workplace allegations. The headlines aren’t getting any better.

The eagles are a big part of why I love living here.

One million scooter rides in under three months? I’ve seen at least half of them zip past me on the sidewalk.

Excited to stare at these little beauties.

Found Chicken: Showed up in yard. LOL.

The Port of Seattle’s latest blog is a love letter to Black excellence, with some seriously cool people featured.

Girlfriend Collective’s spring collection is so sporty, and already in my cart.

U.S. Poet Laureate Ada Limón is coming to Seattle in May. I’ll be revisiting How to Triumph Like a Girl in the meantime.

Rainier Valley’s getting a new park. Love to hear it.

Chris Reykdal had something to say about Trump’s plan to eliminate the Department of Education. He didn’t hold back.

Rainier Beach boys basketball: absolute champs.

This Daffodil Day gallery is very springy and fun. Take a scroll.

Dua Saleh’s KEXP set is electric. Turn it on and try not to fall in love.

The Earth Day Challenge might break your heart a little.

And, who’s down for a salmon BLT?

Reader Comment of the Week:

We had some good ones on our posts about downtown this week (thanks for the sass), but this one from @annfromseattle on our story about moving to Ireland made us laugh:
“The grass is literally greener☘️”

Is it really, though? 😉

New grants fuel neighborhood establishments as downtown changes and pressures mount

The federal government is pulling funding from important community services, research and nonprofits. Across the region, organizations are scrambling to stay open — or closing for good. Small businesses are getting hammered by tariffs and recession fears. But in Seattle’s oldest neighborhood, there’s a different story unfolding. The Alliance for Pioneer Square, a nonprofit focused…

Surveillance debates and a Jurassic-sized surprise

It’s been warm enough to eat outside, so we did: enchiladas and cucumber salad on the deck last night, with a light chicken manure breeze for ambiance. No shade to the neighbors — it’s garden season, and I support it 100%. Here’s what’s going on around town… Spice Waala’s soft serve flavor this week? Turmeric…

Help Seattle win a worldwide wildlife challenge just by taking pictures

Grab your phone, open your camera, and start looking for bugs. Or birds. Or that weird plant you always see but have no idea what it is. Seattle-Tacoma is back in for the world’s largest bioblitz, kicking off April 25. Around here, spotting an eagle during the afternoon commute or a strange mushroom on the…

The Pulse: Too Nice to Work

An elk who knows he's hot and a vending machine that understands us

It’s been offensively nice outside this week. We’re all acting like the past six months of rain never happened and won’t happen again. I love it. I had a colleague once tell me, “No one works past 3 p.m. on Fridays in the Northwest when the weather’s nice.” I’ll be observing that sacred tradition today….
