SODO Community Market Offers New Approach to Tackling Hunger

The new facility serves as a traditional food bank but looks like a grocery store

In June, cherry street food bank became SODO Community Market, with its new name accompanied by a change in location and philosophy. The new facility serves as a traditional food bank but looks like a grocery store, where clients can easily browse and shop (with limits on certain items), then check out with a volunteer who takes inventory, rather than money. This new operation improves the shopping experience for those in need of the food bank’s services, and will be especially appreciated during the holidays, when food demands are higher than usual. New volunteers are appreciated year-round.
