Cozy Coastal Escapes

Who says the beach is only for summertime fun? These six spots, from British Columbia to California, highlight the beauty of the West Coast, all year round.

A coastal hotel overlooks the ocean at sunset, offering beautiful scenery with waves, a sandy beach, and a rocky, tree-covered headland in the background under a colorful West Coast sky.

This article originally appeared in the November/December 2025 issue of Seattle magazine.

It all began with a simple scene: a roaring fire at San Ysidro Ranch, a glass of wine within reach, and a card game unfolding on the table. A quiet evening moment that sparked the notion of a coastal winter journey, where the season’s most alluring escapes share one element: the dancing flame. Whether it’s a gas hearth overlooking the lapping harbor waves, a woodstove warming cedar cabin walls, the easy heat of a pack-and-carry fire pit, or bonfire in the sand, the primordial blaze sharpens the pleasures of the colder months.

Winter brings quieter beaches, the drama of storm watching, and harvest-driven menus. These six retreats are built for the cozy season—ranging from low-key glamping to indulgent luxury, and everything in between.

Magnolia Hotel & Spa

Victoria, British Columbia

Step off the clipper ferry directly into Victoria’s glittering jewel, the Inner Harbour. Amid the bustle of its busy waterfront, the Magnolia Hotel is the place to go for quiet and charm. The hotel’s top two floors feature boutique rooms with gas fireplaces and lofty ceilings, many of them corner suites with sweeping water views.

Spa Magnolia offers targeted skin and body treatments in a calm setting—ideal for warming up after a drizzle-damp stroll along Victoria’s nearby beaches. When the weather insists on indoor activities, trade harbor hopping for a steam-room session or linger in the spa’s relaxation lounge. Dinner celebrates the local harvest at the Courtney Room, where shucked oysters and island-fresh plates meet craft cocktails over candlelight.

Alderbrook Resort & Spa

Union, Washington

Tucked along the fjord-like shores of Hood Canal, Alderbrook Resort stuns with its quintessential Northwest scenery. The main lodge invites chilly travelers in with a welcoming fire and a greenhouse-style hot tub that steams against the cool canal air. Guests feel the coast’s grandeur, then settle into small, warming rituals, like the resort’s nightly beachfront bonfires (pro tip: pick up a s’mores kit at the front desk for a tasty treat). The resort’s full-service spa leans into regional marine botanicals and heated pools—perfect for an afternoon of low-key restoration when rain reclaims the sky.

Two adjoining interior spaces: an indoor pool area with wooden walls and slanted ceiling, and a sauna with bench seating and a heater, both featuring warm wood finishes inspired by Washington’s beautiful scenery.

Wake up refreshed and head out into the brisk air, where walks and hikes can go coastal, or up into the surrounding hills. Back indoors, chef-led tastings and mixology classes keep things lively without requiring boots. Culinary highlights channel Hood Canal’s bounty: The restaurant’s menu favors Hama Hama oysters and local seafood. On a long, lazy morning, the fried oyster omelet with fresh-squeezed juice will keep any thoughts of summer at bay.

Iron Springs Resort

Copalis Beach, Washington

A cliffside classic on the Olympic Peninsula, Iron Springs Resort exudes rustic charm. Most cabins feature centerpiece wood-burning fireplaces with daily wood service, which makes your getaway soundtrack equal parts crackle and surf. The romance here is pared back and baked in—long beach strolls, the smell of wood smoke carried on wind, and cabins that feel like a beloved second home.

When weather pins guests indoors, the resort’s living rooms beg for board games, thick blankets, and great novels on a comfy couch. The hotel’s famous cinnamon rolls—at the ready in the store, to be baked inside the cabin—are a winter tradition worth repeating daily. For a meal that honors the coastline, make the short drive up to the Ocean Crest Resort where halibut, razor clams, and a cliffside view are all reasons to linger.

Snow Peak Campfield

Long Beach Peninsula, Washington

In June 2024, Japanese outdoor brand Snow Peak opened its first U.S. Campfield, a 25-acre property that dresses the Long Beach Peninsula with thoughtfully quiet design. Outfitted with minimalist tent suites and Kengo Kuma-designed Jyubako micro-cabins, the hospitality project is furnished with the brand’s elegant gear and a signature fiery flourish—each campsite includes one of Snow Peak’s branded Pack & Carry fire pits, so evenings can be equal parts hand-warming and stargazing.

For rainy afternoons, the property’s Ofuro Spa—a cedar soaking tub modeled after traditional Japanese baths—turns steam and mist into a restorative practice; the jog from hot water back to a wind-ruffled tent is its own kind of bliss. For on-site sips and nibbles, the Campstore has coffee, tea, beer, and ice cream, but head for Ilwaco’s charming harbor-front taverns, At the Helm and Salt Pub, for a delicious nearby meal.

Headlands Coastal Lodge & Spa

Pacific City, Oregon

Cape Kiwanda’s haystack rock gives Oregon’s North Coast an unforgettable profile; Headlands Coastal Lodge & Spa imbues it with warm hospitality. The property keeps this heat literal—there’s a wood-burning fireplace in the lobby and gas fireplaces in guestrooms—and ceremonial. The lodge offers additional packages, including outdoor activities such as the Wild & Gathered mushroom foraging experience (seasonally available), bonfire kits, forest bathing meditation, and in-room breakfast boards.

Tidepools Spa offers sea-inspired bodywork and steam rituals for stormy afternoons, while rainy day programming ranges from oyster-shucking clinics to mixology workshops. At Meridian Restaurant, Dungeness crab and local salmon get the expert treatment they deserve. Keep an eye out for seasonal chef-led dinners that make the most of Oregon’s coastal larder.

San Ysidro Ranch

Montecito, California

Perched two miles above the beach in the foothills of Santa Barbara, San Ysidro Ranch feels less like a hotel and more like a whispered-about paradise. Thirty-eight vine-draped cottages hide among citrus groves, jasmine, and centuries-old oaks, with landscaping groomed to perfection. The Gardenia Cottage, with a four-poster king bed, antiques, and Persian rugs, has a stone fireplace that practically insists on board games paired with wine. The private outdoor tub and shower are scented by eucalyptus trees, their fragrance flown in on ocean breezes.

Hit reset. Reflecting the beauty of Santa Barbara, San Ysidro Ranch offers a total escape from the stressors
of life.

The Salon & Spa at San Ysidro Ranch is sought after by guests and locals alike. Treatments unfold in rooms warmed by fireplaces and painted with songbirds, where the details—lavender, rosemary, and lemon oils pressed from the ranch gardens—do most of the talking. The Yon-Ka facial is a Parisian favorite, but you can book head-to-toe services, from shampoos, haircuts, and blowouts to a full menu of massage options.

Wander down to Butterfly Beach, where the Pacific Ocean laps against your feet, then trade sand for switchbacks on one of the ranch’s 17 miles of trails. Later, indulge in a private yoga session in your cottage or on the lawn—citrus trees overhead, birds in full chorus—or challenge another guest to a friendly outdoor bocce match to round out the day. By evening, swirl vintages at the Ty Warner Wine Collective, home to 15,000 bottles and the kind of cellar you’d expect only in a European capital.

Two images show sunlit rooms with wooden ceilings: one features a dining table by a large window overlooking beautiful scenery, the other displays a bedroom with French doors and a four-poster bed—perfect for Washington coastal escapes.
A complete menu of optional activities—yoga, the spa, a restaurant and speakeasy, plus 17 miles of hiking trails—allows you to unplug and unwind on manicured grounds that invite a leisurely stroll.

Meals are included in the stay, which feels mischievous when you’re faced with a seafood tower, Osetra caviar, and steak Diane set ablaze tableside. The Stonehouse Restaurant, with its wood burning hearth and terraces strung with lights, is Santa Barbara’s top table, complete with herbs clipped from the chef’s garden. Close the night at Plow & Angel, the firelit speakeasy and a locals’ favorite, where the cocktails whisper of Prohibition gone luxe.

Lessons from the Land

Lessons from the Land

At the Organic Farm School on Whidbey Island, the ground-to-table mindset is rooted in good intentions.

For some, it’s tough to choose between a perfectly sun-ripened summer tomato and a juicy strawberry—but not for my three-year-old. Tomatoes, always tomatoes. Especially one that he has picked directly off the vine, on a working farm filled with fresh produce, chickens, and pigs. As the juice dribbles down his chin, and the sound of…

Tucked into a strip of businesses above Whole Foods, the new lodging offers contemporary, Scandinavian-inspired rooms, a unique wellness program, and one of the city’s best new restaurants.

A little over a decade ago, I was in a wedding at the Pan Pacific Hotel. I don’t remember much about it (the hotel, that is), except that it felt very formal, if not a touch dated, with that general “upscale hotel in any city” kind of vibe. The wedding was fun, but I didn’t…

Gone Glamping

Exploring Under Canvas, Washington’s newest luxury outdoor resort.

I am what could be considered an “indoor cat.” Aside from skiing—and the occasional summer hike—much of my favored activity happens inside. But, as luck would have it, a few years ago, one of my friend groups started camping regularly. Maybe it was COVID-related boredom, or an abundance of free time, but there we were,…
