Get to know winter in Juneau, a destination that’s always in season no matter the season.

Diverse terrain, abundant snowfall and breathtaking scenery make Alaska’s capital city the best-kept secret in snow sports. We’re talking spruce and cedar forest encrusted in ice rime; long, slow sunsets painting the ridgeline pink, purple and orange with alpenglow; evening skies full of stars and, if you’re lucky, the Northern Lights.

For a big mountain experience with a small mountain feel, community owned and operated Eaglecrest Ski Area offers 640 acres of groomed trails, extensive backcountry, a terrain park and panoramic views up and down the Inside Passage. Not extreme enough? Find untouched powder and countless “faceshots” on a heli-skiing adventure in the southern Chilkats of the Alaska Coast Range or the mountains surrounding the Juneau Icefield. Mellower thrill seekers can enjoy snowshoeing and Nordic skiing on Juneau’s extensive trail system—with dozens of miles regularly groomed for both classic and skate. Or blaze your own path, for example, across frozen, iceberg-studded Mendenhall Lake to come face-to-face with Mendenhall Glacier, a favorite local winter pastime. And the activities don’t stop there. Juneau also boasts ice-skating (both pond and rink), ice fishing (pond only, please), ice climbing, snow biking and snow-machining (FYI, that’s what Alaskans call snowmobiles).

When your day ends, come in from the cold at one of Juneau’s many restaurants, bars and cafes. Experience the full splendor of an Alaska winter in a part of Alaska that’s closer, warmer and lighter than you might think: a quick two-and-a-half hour flight from Seattle, with average temperatures in the 20s and 30s, and even at its darkest, six-and-half hours of daylight; by March, the days grow twice as long. And the best part? For now, Juneau remains off the beaten path, which means great deals on airfare, accommodations, car rentals and more. But most importantly: no crowds. So get to know winter in Juneau… before everyone else does.

A New Place to Ice Skate by the Water

Hyatt Regency Lake Washington’s dockside rink offers lake views and eco-friendly synthetic ice.

Skating season has officially arrived. There’s a particular joy in gliding—or trying to—on cold days. I always go for the outdoor rinks, especially the ones strung with twinkling lights. It can be so romantic. And this year, there’s a new place to lace up. A 71-foot by 38-foot covered Glice rink is up and running…

Bergen: Finding a Home, Abroad

Bergen: Finding a Home, Abroad

A trip across western Norway reveals strikingly Northwest sensibilities.

A few months ago, we randomly walked into Wallingford’s Fat Cat Records. Greeting us, face-out by the cash register, was not Nirvana, not Soundgarden, but Peer Gynt Suite, by the Norwegian composer Edvard Grieg. Was this a Norse omen, a mischievous prank from Loki? For us, two Seattleites with a trip to Norway on the…

Hives Among the Headstones

Inside a north Seattle project reimagining cemeteries as sanctuaries for pollinators.

In many old stories, bees are more than just insects. They’re messengers—tiny intermediaries between the living and the dead. There was once even a custom in Europe and America known as “telling the bees:” When a family member died, or another significant life event occurred, someone would go to the hive to share the news….

Dispatches from Greenland, Part Two: Nuuk

Dispatches from Greenland, Part Two: Nuuk

An insider’s guide to Greenland’s mysterious, overlooked, and charming capital.

Greenland is too vast to take in all at once. Yet a few days in Nuuk—the island’s compact, curious capital, just a four-hour flight from Newark—offer a surprisingly complete portrait. Nuuk changes like the weather that shapes it: by turns wild and polished; intimate and bold. To Northerners, it feels as hectic as Manhattan; to…
