5 Things You Need to Eat and Drink in August 2018

Meatball subs! S'mores! Lox and bagels!

Who can even keep up with all the block parties and pop-ups and special dinners and restaurant openings this time of year? I can barely keep up and it’s my job. Between ice cream cones and happy hours on a patio somewhere, here are a few more summer eats you’ve got to get in August:

Check out the new kid.
Though you should never judge a restaurant by its first week (or month) of service, this new Ballard place shows a lot of promise. Sawyer, which opens today, is the new 115-seat restaurant from Lark chef and two-time Cochon555 Seattle winner Mitch Mayers. (He clearly knows his way around some produce and pig parts.) Expect an industrial chic vibe and a menu that includes things like bone marrow matzo ball soup, oxtail nachos and pork belly steam buns. Dinner will be served daily; address is 5309 22nd Ave. NW.

Revisit an old favorite.
If the looooong weekday lunch lines at Salumi have kept you from having a meatball sandwich, take note: the nearly 20-year-old Pioneer Square meat counter opened by Armandino and Marilyn Batali is now open Saturdays from 11 am to 3 pm. Since the area is swarming with nearby office employees Monday through Friday, we’re guessing the weekend may be a better time to pick up a porchetta sammie to take to a ball game, or simply enjoy on a bench in Occidental Square.

Celebrate with s’mores.
I remember August 10 as my daughter’s birthday—others know it as National S’mores Day. Every year, Theo Chocolate celebrates with the most epic s’mores party (no Hershey’s allowed); this year, $1 out of each $5 s’mores purchase goes to Pearl Jam’s Vitalogy Foundation. The tasty treats are made to order at the Fremont factory, with handcrafted graham crackers, marshmallows and choice of Theo chocolate (dark, milk or—the best choice—peanut butter cup). Swing by from noon to 4 p.m. on August 10 and 11.

Brunch like a champ.
Four words: Bagel bite Bloody Mary. Intrigued? Montana in Capitol Hill is hosting new cleverly named pop-up bagel bakery Loxsmith on Saturdays in August. Bagels are fermented for 48 hours and boiled in lye—choose between a bagel sandwich with cream cheese, lox, capers, tomato, onions and dill or a teensy bagel perched on the straw of a Bloody Mary. Starts at noon, runs until sold out.

Join the masses in a rare local Milk Bar event.
You guys, CHRISTINA TOSI IS COMING TO SEATTLE. The queen of nostalgic baked goods, who started as a Momofuku pastry chef before creating her own Milk Bar empire of layer cakes and chewy cookies, is partnering with Canlis for an August 12 party in their parking lot like the Shake Shack event in June. Buy a VIP pass at the Queen Anne farmers market and skip the lines (proceeds benefit the market). Despite the fact that surely all of Seattle’s food nerds will be there, the last event was incredibly orderly—we’re expecting the same level of professionalism here. Show up by noon; save me a cookie.

It was a long wait to get into Kabul, Wallingford’s longtime favorite Afghan restaurant. This was the last week of service before it shuttered. I have passed by this place for years and even worked at a restaurant across the street. Kabul’s mural of the National Geographic Afghan Girl cover—an image that has come to…

Sometimes the best gift you can receive (or even treat yourself to) is to not have to cook during the holidays, so why not take advantage of the restaurants that are staying open? From Blue Water Bistro in Leschi to Ben Paris downtown and Maximilien in Pike Place Market, there are plenty of options on…
