Cars and Cuisine Converge at SoDo Hangout

The Shop and Ethan Stowell's Derby form a car-lover's ideal clubhouse.

This article originally appeared in the November 2017 issue of Seattle magazine.

Gearheads got a new playground this summer when local tech exec Matt Bell opened a private garage and clubhouse, The Shop, in a nondescript building. Members can kick back in the clubhouse—which features a poker room and virtual reality driving simulator—after tinkering on their cars with high-end tools and help from on-site mechanics.

Naturally, there’s a restaurant, too—Derby. Open to the public, the stripped-down gastropub, the latest venture from serial restaurateur Ethan Stowell, keeps up the showroom vibe with a sleek, industrial design and windows for peeking into The Shop’s garage, full of swanky rides, including the moose-head motorcycle from Macklemore’s “Downtown” video. We hear the food’s not bad either.

Onigiri on the Rise

Onigiri on the Rise

Japan’s iconic snack is all the rage from baseball games to Seattle boardrooms, thanks to Onigiri Sen.

Anyone who’s been lucky enough to visit Japan has almost certainly made a pit stop at a 7-Eleven—and left with enough onigiri to feed a bus full of tourists. For the uninitiated, onigiri are rice balls stuffed with seafood or veggies and often wrapped in seaweed. It’s a culinary tradition that’s endured for centuries. Samurai…
