Must See
Bold Play Bootycandy at Intiman Theatre Festival
(9/16 to 10/3, times vary) Through a life-spanning patchwork of scenes and sketches, this semi-autobiographical dark comedy by Robert O’Hara tells one man’s story of growing up black and gay. Witness his obsession with Michael Jackson, liberal use of Jheri Curl and awkward romantic encounters in this satire that rings at times hilarious, at others crushing.

Must Watch
Fashion Film Screening + Cocktails
Monday (9/21, 4:30 p.m.) Local fashion fave Butch Blum has partnered with SIFF’s Women in Cinema mini-festival for an in-store screening of The True Cost, a feature length documentary that explores the impact of fast-fashion on people and the planet. RSVP only to promotions@butchblum.com.

Must Celebrate
Album Release Party for Seattle Musician Ahamefule J. Oluo
Thursday (9/17, 9 p.m.) Celebrate award-winning composer and trumpet player Ahamefule J. Oluo’s new avant-jazz-rock record with a release party at Vermillion Art Gallery on Capitol Hill. It will be a “loud, sweaty live show,” Oluo says, and one where audiences get to see the magic behind the music.

Must View
MOH
AI Presents Legacy of Seattle Hip-Hop
(9/19 to 5/1/2016, times vary) MOHAI takes a funky turn this fall with The Legacy of Seattle Hip-Hop, celebrating the city’s three decades of contributions to the global movement. Conceived by Seattleites Jazmyn Scott (The Town Entertainment) and Aaron Walker-Loud (Big World Breaks), the interactive exhibit includes audio recordings, personal recollections, photography and artwork.

Must Laugh
Kitten N’ Lou’s Sparkly Variety Show

(9/17 to 9/19, times vary) Gender-bending duo Kitten N’ Lou bring their sparkly blend of burlesque, slapstick comedy and outrageous costumes to a new variety show, Overexposed, which finds the real-life couple pondering the regular old realities of married life.

Seattle’s Drag Brunch Has History

The city’s Sunday shows started long before the mimosas got bottomless.

There was a time not too long ago, when drag performances—now a mainstay of Seattle’s queer scene—were kept under wraps. And when brunches, complete with singing and dancing queens dressed in dazzling drag as you sipped mimosas, weren’t a Sunday staple.  During the 1940s and ‘50s, an era largely shaped by restrictive laws and bias…
