Figuring History: Robert Colescott, Kerry James Marshall, Mickalene Thomas
(2/15 – 5/13) American History and art history are reimagined in this group show. “George Washington Carver Crossing the Delaware: Page from an American History Testbook” (see above) by Robert Colescott (1925-2009) riffs on Emanuel Leutze’s mythmaking Revolutionary War image. The exhibit opens Thursday, February 15, with a community celebration at the Seattle Art Museum, and a special event with artists Kerry James Marshall and Mickalene Thomas. Times and prices vary. Noir City
(2/16 – 2/22) The Seattle International Film Festival opens its Noir City event this Friday with the help of “The Czar of Noir,” Eddie Muller of TCM’s Noir Alley. This year’s festival features 18 films, and kicks off with a 35mm screening of The Maltese Falcon starring Humphrey Bogart, live music from the Casey MacGill Trio and a cider tasting with Capitol Cider. U.S. Quidditch Championship
(2/17- 2/18) The favorite sport from the Harry Potter universe is coming to life this weekend in Lacey. US Quidditch is hosting the 2018 Northwest Regional Championship at the Lacey Thurston Regional Athletic Complex, and will feature three community teams from Idaho, Oregon and Washington. The top team will qualify for the 11th US Quidditch Cup in Round Rock, Texas. Best of all, this weekend’s event won’t cost a single Sickle or Galleon. Sgt. Pepper at 50: Pepperland
(2/16 – 2/18): More than 50 years after Sgt. Pepper taught the band to play, the Mark Morris Dance Group is paying tribute to one of the most revered albums of all time. Created at the request of the City of Liverpool to kick off its Sgt. Pepper at 50 Festival, the event pays tribute to the Beatles with fresh arrangements of songs like “A Day in the Life,” “When I’m Sixty-Four,” and “With a Little Help From My Friends.” Friday & Saturday: show at 8:00 p.m., Sunday: show at 2 p.m.; Tickets range from $42.50 to $62.50.
