Must Jam
Fisherman’s Village Music Festival
(3/31-4/2) Seattle isn’t the only place to catch a great show; this weekend, get out of the city and head north to Everett’s annual Fisherman’s Village Music Festival, an all-ages event hosted by the Everett Music Initiative. Check out over fifty local bands from afternoon to night at a number of downtown Everett venues like Tony V’s Garage, Everett Performing Arts Center, Black Lab Gallery and The Anchor. The lineup this year includes acts like Jenn Champion, Fruit Juice and Everett’s own Kevin Murphy of The Moondoggies. All venues are first come, first served, so be sure to get there early if there’s an act you can’t miss. Times and prices vary. Downtown Everett, thefishermansvillage.com

Must Fight Back
Free Krav Maga Seattle Self-Defense Class
(4/1) On March 5th, Kelly Herron was brutally attacked by a man in a restroom at Golden Gardens Park, where she was training for a marathon. Using skills she had learned three weeks earlier at a self-defense class, she escaped and trapped her assailant in the bathroom. This Saturday, in recognition of April as Sexual Assault Awareness Month, Seattle’s Krav Maga (named for the official self defense and combat system of the Israeli Defense Forces) will hold its third annual Women’s Empowerment Seminar, a free, three-hour session where women fourteen-and-up will learn skills like the ones Herron used to defend herself against her attacker. 1-4 p.m., free. (3/31–4/2) Using original music, dance and poetry, a cast of seven child abuse survivors take center stage with personal stories of childhood abuse. By sharing their experiences and the strength and courage that helped them through, Telling is a roadmap of healing to other victims and survivors. In recognition of Child Abuse Prevention Month, a portion of the proceeds will be used to benefit local organizations that support sexual abuse survivors and work to prevent abuse. Must Kindle the Home Fire
Our Journey Home
(4/4) Seattle shelters are filled with thousands of men, women and children each night, and almost 2.2 million people throughout the nation live in public housing. The documentary, Our Journey Home, narrated by Jewel, tells true and timely stories of the people behind these statistics as they struggle to support family, educate themselves, give back to society and finally, have a place they can call home. Housing Authority Insurance’s ReThink initiative and a group of Seattle-based organizations join together to host this local film screening. A Q&A featuring local experts will follow. 6:30 p.m., $9. Northwest Tune-Up Bike and Music Festival Brings Big Air and Loud Sets to Bellingham

The three-day festival celebrates its fifth year with bike competitions and a genre-spanning music lineup—plus one unforgettable band of mummies.

If I were to summarize the sensation of attending Northwest Tune-Up, Bellingham’s three-day bike and music festival, in one image, it would be watching Tomomi Nishikubo—a Japanese street trials biker—doing acrobatic acts of derring-do on his bike while Seattle rockers Thunderpussy shred in the distance. My second lasting impression of the festival would be rounding…

Ferry Tales: Eight Indie Bookstores Worth the Ride

Ferry Tales: Eight Indie Bookstores Worth the Ride

Plan a summer day around these bookshops in Seattle, Bremerton, Bainbridge Island, Kingston, and Poulsbo.

Independent bookstores tend to be cornerstones of the communities in which they reside, and Seattle is no exception. In addition to helping customers discover their next read, these neighborhood hubs host weekly gatherings and events, like publication release parties, author talks, and book clubs. Many of them have cafés and reading tables that encourage lingering…

Things I did, saw, ate, learned, or read in the past week (or so).

SEATTLE ART FAIR RETURNS  The buzziest event of the summer (well, aside from the World Cup), is returning next week. Now in its 10th edition, the Seattle Art Fair will once again take over the Lumen Field Event Center, packing it to the gills with art from 101 local, national, and international galleries. This year,…

Studio Sessions: Jennifer Leigh Harrison

Studio Sessions: Jennifer Leigh Harrison

Seattle artist Jennifer Leigh Harrison uses layers of paint and abstraction to explore what we carry beneath the surface.

Jennifer Leigh Harrison’s paintings are dense with movement. Color and texture gather into mosaic-like fields, as if they have been fractured and reformed. There are places in the work where a frenetic buzz seems trapped between the canvas and the first layer of paint. That energy runs through Patterns of Belonging, her current exhibition at…
