Dog of the Month: Charlie
A would-be space traveler with a complicated legal history.
By Scott Allison / Saving Great Animals February 26, 2026
Charlie is about 10 months old, though his foster parent describes him as an “old soul.” He loves being around people and other dogs, but his social calendar has been limited after an unfortunate encounter with a skunk before he was found just outside Yakima.
He is also the recipient of a lifetime ban from Meteor Crater Natural Landmark for what local authorities referred to as an “amusing, yet extremely illegal” attempt to steal their Apollo 11 space capsule. When asked what prompted the attempted theft, Charlie scoffed and said he was “open to any other brilliant ideas you might have for getting to the moon.”

Charlie is a mixed breed with a shepherd look and weighs around 40 pounds. He is friendly and social and would do well with another dog or as an only dog. He has not been introduced to cats or young children. He is vaccinated, microchipped, and neutered.
Saving Great Animals is a Seattle-based rescue focused on matching adoptable dogs with families based on breed, age, and lifestyle. Dogs are placed in foster homes while the organization works to find the right long-term fit. Adopters are offered a two-week in-home trial, along with training and ongoing support to help ensure a successful transition. The goal is simple: find the right dog for the right home.
