The Sea Cowboy
Nick Mendoza wants his snacks to provoke thought as well as taste
The sea-loving part of him first pursued a career in marine science. He tagged great white sharks in California, researched ways to improve the sustainability of oyster farms in Scotland, and explored the inner workings of a large shrimp farm in Central America. He soon discovered that his advocacy for the ocean could only go so far in his chosen field, though he never thought he’d launch a seafood snack company.
Ten Restaurants We’d Love to See More of in 2024
Changing the meaning of eating local
It’s common this time of year for year-end roundups touting the newest, “best, most exciting” restaurants, but looking ahead to 2024, I want to hone in on a different set of restaurants redefining what it means to eat local in Seattle.
Match Game
Online dating requires skill. Here’s a simple guide.
Your profile is the digital first impression. Unlike the real world, you can’t rely on natural charm, inexplicable chemistry, pheromones, or other intangibles humans have used to attract a mate for millennia. Everything boils down to the pivotal profile. The reality is, most people spend between three to seven seconds on a profile before swiping left or right. So, it’s in your best interest to put some thought into it.
The Sights of Sayulita
Where to shop, eat, and drink
The best dinner in town is making rounds to the street vendors for tamales and tacos (Gaby’s has the top fish tacos around), but if a sit-down situation is more your speed, then Barracuda or Mary’s offer excellent options from ceviche to shrimp tacos. For a morning boost, Anchor Café offers coffee (the vanilla coconut cold brew is delicious), toasts, smoothie bowls, and more.
The Shores of Sayulita
Using Mexican design sensibilities, Seattle architect Robert Humble built a contemporary home and vacation rental
When architect Robert Humble and his wife, Nicole Johnson, first visited Sayulita, Mexico, in 2009, it was the kind of sleepy little town that adventurous travelers hope to stumble upon. Surfers, artists, and yoginis mingled with the local community, and everything moved at a slower pace so often prevalent in tropical climates.
Seattle’s Guide to New Year’s Eve
A full slate of events to welcome 2024
The center of Seattle’s New Year’s Eve festivities is at the Seattle Center. More specifically, the T-Mobile New Year’s at the Needle. This year’s expanded 18-minute show will begin at 11:53 p.m. with a performance of 500 drones produced for the second year by Sky Elements. The fireworks show by Pyro Spectacular by Souza, recognized as “the largest structurally launched firework show in North America” according to a statement from the Space Needle, kicks off 2024 at the stroke of midnight.
The Queen of Neon
Bea Haverfield’s colorful signage helped define Seattle
It all started when I randomly stumbled upon a reference to a female artist who reportedly designed some of Seattle’s most iconic signs back in the 1940s and ’50s. Nothing substantial had been written about this person, but after some preliminary detective work, I was able to contact her surviving daughter, Kathleen Wolff, who was thrilled that someone had finally taken notice of her late mother’s work.
How to Survive and Thrive During the Holidays
Firm boundaries aren’t just for cats
My cat kept jumping onto the bed as I made it. He’d dive into the folds, scratching my comforter. I set him on the floor and grabbed a nearby laundry basket, tipped it upside down, and trapped him underneath. He found this amusing. I finished the bed, then went on to make a few more. I forgot about him.
The Seattle Naturals
Gaurav Tiwari and Andy Comer are on an unadulterated mission: to bring awareness of naked wine to the masses
Though not a wine critic by any means, I’ve had my fair share of wine from all over the world, even geeking out over Vinho Verde for a time, but I had no clue what a pet-nat was. When a glass of sparkling white wine was placed before me, I liked that its bubbles were only mildly flirtatious, keeping me entertained by its delicate effervescence. My first sip reminded me of an apple just before it begins to ripen.
A Painful Lesson Learned
Regardless of circumstances, when hurt happens open your heart to injured parties
I grew up in a world, or ocean, of systemic white privilege. It’s sometimes hard to see, and sometimes understand, what I haven’t experienced. I was taught to see racism or misogyny or homophobia only in individual acts of meanness, not in invisible systems conferring dominance on my group.

‘The Joy of Costco’
Fans write a book detailing everything you’d ever want to know about Costco, and more
New York residents David and Susan Schwartz love shopping at Costco Wholesale. So much, in fact, that the couple wrote a book about it. The 272-page book is also full of tips for shopping at the warehouse giant, making it a handy guide for those tackling their holiday shopping at Costco this season.
Around the World, Sip by Sip (Part Two)
Quench your thirst for travel without leaving Seattle
Like wine, mezcal and pisco have been carefully produced in their native countries, Mexico and Peru, for centuries, with each farm, grower, and distiller imparting characteristics that cannot be separated from the land itself. Step into these regions with a glass in hand and conjure the magical streets of Oaxaca or Cusco. Bring the same taste for adventure you would to travel by sampling these exotic spirits from around the globe here in Seattle.
Debate, Devour, Divide
How weaponized language spreads disinformation
Now, those on the left are using it to attack one another. In these online spaces, people tend to panic at the idea of being part of the problem. As a result, they try to position themselves as champions of a very perfect model of social justice that quickly shuts down anyone who doesn’t fit. People are trying to position themselves as the most moral individual with the best ideas and perfect grasp of language.
The Best Gifts for Travel Lovers
Tinsel, eggnog, mistletoe, and luggage
Travel lovers are the easiest people to buy for. Wrap a gift in old maps and they’ll spend hours deciphering the roadways and important coordinates. Put something inside the wrapping that will satiate their wanderlust, or encourage it, and you might be their next invitee to Paris.
Flying Cars, Driving in The Ocean
Bruce Wanta’s imagination influences his love of cars
Bruce Wanta developed a knack for the mechanical from his family’s bike shop. He fell in love with cars because his father also presided over a driving school. At a very young age, Wanta had a list of distinctive vehicles he wanted to own. At the top was the Maserati Bora, a magnificent creation designed by Giorgetto Giugiaro at Italdesign. Wanta, though, had other things he wanted to accomplish.

Need to escape Seattle this winter? Need some inspiration to pack a carry-on and cash in those miles? Here are four nonstop flights for nonstop escape. In June, Alaska Airlines announced new nonstop service to Nassau, Bahamas, beginning Dec. 15. Board one of these flights at 9 a.m. and land just six hours later. Even…
When Harry Met Allie
Not every meaningful connection results in love
I walk across the lobby toward the restaurant maitre’d, squeezing my abdominal muscles to balance in my heels on the marble floors. I identify my date from his photos sitting at a table in the back corner. To the chagrin of friends and family, I recently reset my dating app age preferences to max out at 45, not 40.
