Must Watch
SIFF Cinema Reopens the Egyptian Theatre

Starting 10/3, times vary — This month SIFF officially reopens the Egyptian movie theater as a year-round venue heretofore known as SIFF Cinema Egyptian. Go for the slew of opening-weekend events, including screenings of the Egyptian’s greatest hits (Amélie, My Neighbor Totoro, Y Tu Mamá También), to and return for a Hedwig and the Angry Inch sing-along (10/10) and the return of midnight movies, including Tremors (10/18), Cabin in the Woods (10/25) and The Rocky Horror Picture Show (10/31).

Must Laugh
Seattle Rep Presents The Vaudevillians

(10/3 to 11/2, times vary) — Performer Jerick Hoffer—aka Jinkx Monsoon—is at it again with this revival of a sold-out off-Broadway hit. Hoffer plays Kitty Witless, a vaudevillian who with her sidekick, Dr. Dan Von Dandy, was frozen while on tour in Antarctica in the 1920s. Thanks to global warming, the pair has emerged from the ice to find that many of their hits have been misinterpreted by such upstarts as Janis Joplin and Gloria Gaynor.

Must Hear
Seattle Symphony Performs Works from Antonín Dvořák

(10/2 to 10/4, times vary) — Late-20th-century Czech composer Antonín Dvořák dominates the season at the Seattle Symphony, with Ludovic Morlot conducting several of his masterworks over three weeks. We suggest the performance of Symphony No. 9 in E minor (aka “From the New World”), the energetic, rhythmic work Dvořák wrote when he was living in New York City.

Seattle's Drag Brunch Has History

Seattle’s Drag Brunch Has History

The city’s Sunday shows started long before the mimosas got bottomless.

There was a time not too long ago, when drag performances—now a mainstay of Seattle’s queer scene—were kept under wraps. And when brunches, complete with singing and dancing queens dressed in dazzling drag as you sipped mimosas, weren’t a Sunday staple.  During the 1940s and ‘50s, an era largely shaped by restrictive laws and bias…
